Guest guest
Carol - We were just contacted by the STAR Oncology Rehab Support Program and we participated in a phone conference/webinar presentation yesterday (Dec 27th). Although I support the philosophy of the program, there is a huge expense involved. Their recommendation was to create a separate Rehab Oncology Service Line, which our organization would not likely do since we already have an Oncology Service Line and an Ortho.Neurosciences (rehabilitation) Service Line. It sounds as if they have everything packaged - staff education, assessment forms, evidence-based practice, marketing, etc., for evaluating and treating oncology patients. It seems that we can already do all of these things on our own, without the fee to be a provider for STAR Oncology Rehab, but there could be benefit to marketing via the program. They emphasize utilizing existing resources (staff, etc), but for us, that does not seem reasonable (or possible, considering our current staff:caseload ratio) I suspect our Oncology Service Line will be interested in this - if they decide to fund it, it will be difficult for us to provide the services with our existing staffing pattern. I do respect their philosophy that other diagnoses have rehabilitation programs, and that oncology patients have similar need for rehabilitation. I will be interested to know whether you decide to join the program, and if so, what the benefits or limitations are.
