Guest guest
My husband bought some fluorescent bulbs for our overhead kitchen lights-- in looking over some sites on mercury and fluorescent lights it appears that the only danger is if the bulb breaks right?? It also mentioned something about mercury vapors when the contact is heated, so does this mean that as the lights are turned on, that mercury vapor is coming into my house or is it contained within the bulb??? Either way, I'm nervous about them now that I read about this. W
Guest guest
Two years ago, in May of 2001, at the Biomedical Conference on Autism near Detroit, one of the speakers warned of flourscent lighting being a source of mercury. I'm pretty sure the statement came from Cave's presentation, but I could be wrong. (I had " diagnosed " my then 22 month old with autism just a couple of weeks before and the conference totally overloaded me. Speakers included Andy Wakefield, Shattock, Jon Pangborn, Cave, Sid Baker's nurse, and . We did go on to get a real diagnosis and are intervening at full strength.) > My husband bought some fluorescent bulbs for our overhead kitchen > lights-- in looking over some sites on mercury and fluorescent > lights it appears that the only danger is if the bulb breaks right?? > It also mentioned something about mercury vapors when the contact is > heated, so does this mean that as the lights are turned on, that > mercury vapor is coming into my house or is it contained within the > bulb??? > > Either way, I'm nervous about them now that I read about this. > > W
Guest guest
just doing a bit of research fluorescent lamps can have a drop of mercury or a bit of mercury amalgam in(lol you couldn't ask for better evidence amalgam gives of mercury vapour1!) the amalgam mercury fluorecsent lamps only contain 10% the amount of mercury compared to the liquid drop type but need a different fitting i think anyway in theory the vapour should be contained in the tube, the tube wouldn't work unless the vapour was contained.... the most dangerous situation would be for the tube to break while hot since this will mean a lot of vapur would be released and showering hot liquid mercury everywhere would not be good... don't know about thse new round type fluorescent bulds, may contain amalgam fluorescent lamps should be disposed of as toxic waste because of the mercury and not put in landfills. > > My husband bought some fluorescent bulbs for our overhead kitchen > > lights-- in looking over some sites on mercury and fluorescent > > lights it appears that the only danger is if the bulb breaks > right?? > > It also mentioned something about mercury vapors when the contact > is > > heated, so does this mean that as the lights are turned on, that > > mercury vapor is coming into my house or is it contained within the > > bulb??? > > > > Either way, I'm nervous about them now that I read about this. > > > > W
Guest guest
One thing to consider about fluorescent (thank goodness for spellchecker) lights is that they " pulse " rather than emitting a steady stream of light like incandescent lights. Most people can't detect the pulse, but some can. Some (my husband is one) say that the pulsing of fluorescent lights makes them nervous, irritable and unable to focus. This is especially true of some people with learning disabilities and dyslexia - although I'm, not sure about autism. My husband is very intelligent but slightly dyslexic and functions MUCH better under incandescent lights. For what it's worth -

Josie I can't be around the compact fluorescent light bulbs. They give me a migraine, vertigo and nausea. They also will cause interference, buzzing and sound distortion in a hearing aid. Guest guest
There is a great variation in the emissions from fluorescent lights. It depends what kind of ballast, what condition (visible flicker, audible noise), how it is installed, what kind of bulbs. Guest guest
Hi Josie, I know quite a few people who are sensitive to fluorescent lighting. The new compact fluorescents are extremely bad for three reasons - 1)the mercury: they need to be disposed of as hazardous waste 2)they give off high electromagnetic radiation 3)they also give off UV radiation. The Canadian government is studying the last two. Unfortunately, they are still working towards banning incandescent bulbs by 2012. The alternative is LED, which are getting cheaper and more user friendly (a better light for reading). In the meantime, stay away from those places that have a high quantity of fluorescent lighting. If you are sensitive to it, listen to your body! If you don't listen, it will only weaken your immune system over time. That said, there are ways to strenthen your immune system - cleanses, reducing your toxin intake, etc. I hope this helps. Guest guest
So are the LED lights good for electrosensitivity then? - I had just found out about them from an electrician friend of mine last week! I have steadfastly refused to go Fleuro.. Cheers Pete enviroky wrote: > Hi Josie, > I know quite a few people who are sensitive to fluorescent lighting. Guest guest
I've experimented with two Lights of America LED bulbs, 1.5W and 3.5 W. I was pleasantly surprised not to detect any noise on an AM radio. The harmonic buzz at ELF magnetic fields was bad, so I wouldn't want these near my head (or sleep near a wire feeding these). The lights are not very bright, and the color spectrum of LEDs currently is very artificial. I suspect there could be subliminal flicker in some too. I'm looking at the 3.5 W (model 2004LEDDL) now and it says " Not for use with dimmer circuit, " which is rather suspicious. LED bulbs are very promising, but read this review before buying: http://www.amazon.com/review/RQWX3NZN1RJN4/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm Bill On Sun, May 31, 2009 at 6:10 AM, pete <peter.needham@...> wrote: > > > So are the LED lights good for electrosensitivity then? - I had just > found out about them from an electrician friend of mine last week! > > I have steadfastly refused to go Fleuro.. > > Cheers > Pete > > > enviroky wrote: > > Hi Josie, > > I know quite a few people who are sensitive to fluorescent lighting. Guest guest
I get dizzy and wobbly, can't think straight and it bothers my vision. If I stay too long, I get really hot and can feel quite faint. However, it varies with the day -- some days I manage, some days I can't take it at all. Strangely, it varies with the time of day. I can manage fluorescent lights pretty well in the evening, but not during the day. That makes no sense to me. Stores like Target and WalMart are the worst -- grocery stores too. I can't stand any flicker with lights -- so even if it's a regular light, with a ceiling fan making the light seem like it's flickering, it bothers me. Guest guest
Oh yes! I'd forgotten this bothers me greatly too. I cannot stand the ceiling light and the fan on at the same time. Some people can't stand the flickering sunlight through the trees. That is why sometimes this affliction reminds me of epilepsy. Amy (the other Amy) I can't stand any flicker with lights -- so even if it's a regular light, with a ceiling fan making the light seem like it's flickering, it bothers me. Guest guest
Interesting - I generally enjoy sunlight filtering through the trees. I do, however, despise visibly flickering fluorescent lights. I was in the drugstore the other day and a few were doing it; I asked the woman at the counter if she noticed it, and she said, " yeah, I see it, but it really doesn't bother me at all. " What? I don't know how anyone can't find that rapid pulsing at least a bit disorienting. I dislike fluorescent lighting as a rule, but some places are better than others. Walmart (which I've only been in once in my life) feels like hell; dunno what it is about that place, certainly it's the lights, but the whole building inside feels like it's crushing you. The employees seemed like zombies; I'm not surprised. R.
