Guest guest
Question: Does anyone know any reason why I shouldn't try to give my son (12) KAVA for anxiety issues? (ASD) on Depakote (seizures under control, I believe they are from mercury poisoning). thanks, tina Answer: Drugs for seizure disorders [Depakote, etc.] elevate prolactin levels (hormone related to nursing). Common manifextations of " hyperprolactinemia " in women include amenorrhea (lack of menstrural cycles), breast enlargement, and breast milk secretion in the absence of nursing. Men with hyperprolactinemia typically show decreased sex drive, decreased sperm production, impotence and increased breast enlargement. Prolactin down-regulates the effect of several other important hormones (especially testosterone) as well as possibly some neurotransmitters (such as dopamine). The obvious questions is this: What does elevated prolactin levels do to children's hormones, now and in their future? Natural progesterone cream (which can be purchased over the counter) is reported to reduce seizure activity in the brain. It should be a safer alternative than Depakote. Progesterone also reduces anxiety. Janet McAuley

I don't agree that just because something is " natural " it will necessarily do less. Especially when it is a natural sex hormone intended to be given in doses to mimic adult female homone levels (which are dramatically higher than children have and for progesterone typically somewhat higher than men have as well).
