I have a four month old, too! Lots of 4 monthers on this list, I guess :)

Welcome to the list :) (And if you want LOTS of 4 month olds, I'm on a

bulletin board and another list with January 2000 babies.)

Hello my name is Ellen, i have 3 children nearly 6, nearly 5, and 4

months old. I have been an active member in the NCT since my first baby

was 6 weeks old, i built up a friendship with lots of people, but i have

since moved to Dartford in kent and i do not know anybody in this area,

there is not really any active nct in this area but i would like to

change that. i would also like to speak to people with babies the same

age as mine so i can compare developments.

Hi Ellen,

nice to see a new face!

I have a 13 week old, does she count?! Verity is our first and

my only regret is I didn't have her years ago. Like I

still see her as an almost-newborn, probably helped by the fact

that out of the 10 babies we know in the area (through NCT

classes and NHS breastfeeding and postnatal class) she's the

youngest. And like (again!) I love our feeds at midnight

and 4am, just the two of us in the pitch dark with DH snoring

beside us!

Oooh, have a read of Three in a Bed by ?Deborah (can't be bothered

to go up and check!) and you'll discover that you *do* have permission to

sleep with your baby! Think there's loads of co-sleeping going on on this

list isn't there?

(And yes H, I'll let you have your book back soon!)

Yes Deborah . She's a speaker/workshop leader at the LLL

conference in August. I've got 'Do Not Disturb' but never got past the

first couple of chapters since I felt it was just telling me what I

thought already (does that make sense?)

A midwife (in hospital) had placed Steffi in bed with me with 12 hours

of giving birth so even some of the most unexpected people encourage it

too!

We've co-slept from day 1 with each of our children, including the

hospital-born one. We have put them in their cot at about a year, without

any problems.

We haven't had any problems with duvets - I instinctively have my arms on

the outside (any boarding school humour?) and that keeps it safe. Hannah

sleeps usually in the middle of the bed, but occasionally on the outside,

when I keep my arm around her.

We have never had crying in the night, even though none of my babies has

slept through early on. Hannah still wakes at least twice a night but I

latch her on (or shove it in) when she starts breathing rapidly.

After 8 years of this, I'm okay with broken nights - I often get up a 4am to

do my emails etc - you thought YOU were addicted to the computer LOL! - I'm

clearly still on GMT.

I'd say the only disadvantage of not using the cot, is that Hannah will not

sleep in her cot for naps. We have to use the carseat for this, or even the

floor. I'm sure, though, that we could have trained her to sleep in the cot

in the daytime and early evening - but a transatlantic move at 4mo made this

a little difficult.

and Martha Sears, a couple of California pediatric people (he's

a

paed, she's a nurse and LLL leader), have written a bunch of books

about

babies and children. They are firm advocates of breastfeeding and the

'family bed' in whatever combination works best for you (baby and older

children in your bed or right by it or not, depending on the child's

needs) I had only heard of them, but even before I read any of it,

Calvin

was in our bed because we couldn't get him to sleep anywhere else.

Reading

their book " Nighttime Parenting " just made me feel more comfortable

about

what we were already doing.

Since then, Calvin has decided sleeping in his own bed isn't so bad,

but

almost always ends up in our bed at about 5 am, when I just want to

stay

in bed, but he wants to eat before he goes back to sleep.
