You could hang a clipboard with check off times after each cleaning so that

it is not too time consuming.

Subject: Joint Commission & Cleaning

Last week we had our Joint Commission survey and a question that came up was

how often is the equipment cleaned? I responded that it is cleaned after

each patient use. The follow up question was then, how do you know it has

been cleaned?/How does a patient know it has been cleaned?

I honestly did not have a good answer for that. For things that need to be

" put away " , such as weights or smaller pieces of equipment, they get cleaned

before being put away.

For things such as the parallel bars, treadmills, bikes and other large

pieces of equipment that don't get " put away " how do other facilities

indicate that it has in fact been cleaned?

Should everything be cleaned in the presence of the patient before it is

used?

I can't imagine somehow " labeling " every piece of equipment once it is

cleaned.

I welcome any suggestions the group may have for addressing this issue.

Thank You!

I would answer it this way...... " I wash or sanitize my hands after each patient

(which by the way is MORE important) but don't have a log for it nor do I have

the patient follow me to the sink. "

More regulation and paperwork......

That's just me.

Surveyors ask questions for many reasons but doesn & #39;t always indicate

deficiencies. They ask questions on a whim, to probe, to judge your

authenticity, or maybe because they feel you may be demonstrating a new best

practice.

Don & #39;t sweat it. The surveyor already forgot her question and your response.

,

I never kept records of each piece of equipment being cleaned, however in my

clinics, my PTA put a little sign on each treatment table after cleaning that

said it had been cleaned " just for you " .

We may be reading too much into the surveyor’s question. In general the Joint

Commission Standards do not specify what you have to do for infection control

(with some exceptions for hand washing, etc.) What they are looking for is

that you have a policy, train your staff and follow the policy.

The best answer to the surveyor’s question would likely have been: Our policy

is to clean after every patient, we train all staff at orientation and we

periodically observe practices in the clinic to assure that this is being done.

If there is any question that it has been done, we repeat the cleaning process.

We keep weights to be cleaned in a wash basin near the clean weights and hang

them  once they are washed and dried.  Everything is in plain sight in the gym.
