Lake Worth Chiropractic Care Helps Manage Low Back Pain Caused by Sciatica Anyone in Florida know if there is a PT in the house? I can't find one on the website. Lake Worth Chiropractic Care Helps Manage Low Back Pain Caused by Sciatica LAKE WORTH, FL, Mar 13, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Dr. Jack Cacic Chiropractic in Lake Worth, FL is using chiropractic care to help patients struggling with low back pain, hip pain, and other chronic pain. According to Dr. Cacic, the practice's chiropractor, a herniated or compressed disc can put pressure on nearby nerves, causing chronic pain. Spinal adjustments can help restore proper alignment to the body, relieving pressure on the nerves. The wellness center offers spinal adjustments, massage therapy, and physical therapy for natural pain management. The practice serves the Palm Springs, West Palm Beach, Boynton Beach, Lantana and Green Acres communities. Lake Worth chiropractor Dr. Jack Cacic announced his success treating chronic low back pain, hip pain and sciatica using non-invasive spinal adjustments. These treatments focus on correcting the underlying cause for pain, providing long-term relief. " Chiropractic care is different from traditional medical care, " said Dr. Cacic. " While medication can provide pain relief, drugs work by 'covering up' pain, rather than correcting the underlying cause. Chiropractic care is different. My goal is to identify and correct the underlying cause for a patient's pain, such as a herniated disc. " Natural wear and tear, an auto accident injury or personal injury can all cause a misalignment of the musculoskeletal system. For example, the traumatic force of an auto accident can force the spine beyond its normal range of motion, causing a disc to slip out of place. If the disc compresses nearby nerves, patients will experience chronic pain. Sciatica occurs when a herniated or compressed disc puts pressure on the sciatic nerve in the lower back. This pressure can cause a radiating pain sensation in the legs, lower back and buttocks -- preventing patients from living an active life. As long as the disc continues to compress the sciatic nerve, patients will experience pain. " Patients with chronic back pain or hip pain do not have to compromise their active lifestyle, " said Dr. Cacic. " Thanks to advancements in chiropractic adjustments, a chiropractor can help restore alignment to the body and relieve pressure on the nerves. Whether this is a new or on-going chronic condition, it is never too late to get healthy! " According to Dr. Cacic, chiropractic adjustments work by creating space in the spine. When the spine is compressed after an injury, there is not enough space for the vertebrae and discs to be aligned. Spinal adjustments, however, create new space in the spine, allowing the compressed disc to return to its proper position and no longer compress the sciatic nerve. " Chiropractic adjustments work because they focus on the underlying cause for an injury, rather than simple managing the symptoms, " said Dr. Cacic. " Not only do adjustments provide immediate pain relief, but by correcting the underlying problem, they ensure patients can live an active life. " The practice also offers massage therapy and *physical therapy treatments*. These complementary therapies are designed to enhance pain relief and speed internal healing. Massage therapy, for example, stimulates the flow of oxygenated blood, which studies show helps to flush out waste from the muscles. Physical therapy may also help restore movement, flexibility and coordination to the body. Guest guest
Right you are Steve. Knowledge of the state laws would be helpful, especially in recent events, not only in todays rant, but also in the events that occurred last week when many PT's from around the country had a tizzy about the chiropractor in Merrit Island. I don't know why I was so bothered by this, because I too do not appreciate misleading ads. Being duly licensed for both PT and DC in Florida, I did go to the source for state laws and regulations to find that chiropractors do have the right to use the term physical therapy and physiotherapy interchangeably. I suppose this is one of the problems.   DC's do take a physical therapy section on state board exams to receive the extra portion on their license to use physiotherapy (modalities) along with phlebotomy (both parts are optional ). By the way, because I was so taken back by the rhetoric from several PT's on PT manager, I wanted to find out what the DC in Merrit Island had to say about what he was doing. I was imbarrased by what he told me. His office received many harrassing/threatening calls and messages left on his answering machine over a two day period. Yes they did change their web, however he explained to me he did so not knowing state law at that moment. He is now reviewing the material and will be modifying the web. He also considered a lawsuit, but dosen't want to spend the time or money. We are in a difficult time in our careers and people are a bit fraigle. While I admire some of the watchdogs out there protecting their turfs, I would urge people to take caution in their policing of the communities to avoid unlawful or inappropriate mass action.  Seidner, PT, DC   Subject: RE: Anyone in Florida know if there is a PT in the house? Guest guest
To my knowledge, there are no " protected " terms in Florida, but there are definitions included in our practice act that define " practice of physical therapy. " Here's the direct web link to the site as well as an exerpt pasted below. I didn't look at his website yet, but he might have PT's who work for him at his clinic (one would hope). http://www.leg.state.fl.us/STATUTES/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute & Search_St\ ring= & URL=0400-0499/0486/Sections/0486.021.html (11) “Practice of physical therapy†means the performance of physical therapy assessments and the treatment of any disability, injury, disease, or other health condition of human beings, or the prevention of such disability, injury, disease, or other condition of health, and rehabilitation as related thereto by the use of the physical, chemical, and other properties of air; electricity; exercise; massage; the performance of acupuncture only upon compliance with the criteria set forth by the Board of Medicine, when no penetration of the skin occurs; the use of radiant energy, including ultraviolet, visible, and infrared rays; ultrasound; water; the use of apparatus and equipment in the application of the foregoing or related thereto; the performance of tests of neuromuscular functions as an aid to the diagnosis or treatment of any human condition; or the performance of electromyography as an aid to the diagnosis of any human condition only upon compliance with the criteria set forth by the Board of Medicine. A physical therapist may implement a plan of treatment for a patient. The physical therapist shall refer the patient to or consult with a health care practitioner licensed under chapter 458, chapter 459, chapter 460, chapter 461, or chapter 466, if the patient’s condition is found to be outside the scope of physical therapy. If physical therapy treatment for a patient is required beyond 21 days for a condition not previously assessed by a practitioner of record, the physical therapist shall obtain a practitioner of record who will review and sign the plan. A health care practitioner licensed under chapter 458, chapter 459, chapter 460, chapter 461, or chapter 466 and engaged in active practice is eligible to serve as a practitioner of record. The use of roentgen rays and radium for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes and the use of electricity for surgical purposes, including cauterization, are not authorized under the term “physical therapy†as used in this chapter. The practice of physical therapy as defined in this chapter does not authorize a physical therapy practitioner to practice chiropractic medicine as defined in chapter 460, including specific spinal manipulation. For the performance of specific chiropractic spinal manipulation, a physical therapist shall refer the patient to a health care practitioner licensed under chapter 460. Nothing in this subsection authorizes a physical therapist to implement a plan of treatment for a patient currently being treated in a facility licensed pursuant to chapter 395 Hope this helps. Guest guest
A quick review of the Chiro practice act says they may provide " physiotherapy " . Last year, I was reviewing one of the curriculums for Logan chiro school and noticed they had either electives or standard classes in Physical Therapy. It seems the chiro colleges are putting out the language; so, it's unlikely that the students understand how they are trashing another profession. Below is one example of their curriculum Trimester 7 Health Center Practicum Specialized Elective Technique, Principles of Physical Therapy, Professional Development Diagnostic Imaging, Endocrinology, Gastrointestinal-Urogenital Diagnosis, Geriatrics Research Methodology Steve Passmore PT, MS Healthy Recruiting Tools spass@... Guest guest
Physical Therapy or physiotherapy does not appear to be a protected term in Florida - the excerpt to the PT Practice Act posted above 486.021 is not the most relevant section of the PT practice act to Term Protection. Florida Statutes 486.135 http://bit.ly/xMMDsW describes who can and cannot use the term " Physical Therapy " . Unfortunately, as described by other posters in this thread, the Florida Chiropractic Act 460.403 http://bit.ly/xayqlP specifically states that Chiropractors MAY use the term " physical therapy " . " Chiropractic physicians may adjust, manipulate, or treat the human body by manual, mechanical, electrical, or natural methods; by the use of physical means or physiotherapy... " Apparently, it doesn't matter if there is a physical therapist in the house, or not.
