Compensation guidelines?

Our facility is looking at compensation and the question has come up about

equity/inequity of professional salaries between PT, OT and Speech. Does anyone

have any guidelines re: whether PT, OT and SLP salary ranges should be the same,

or is one profession routinely higher on the compensation scale?

I am not looking for dollar amounts, just whether PTs are routinely paid higher

than OTs. Or are PTs and OTs routinely paid the same, but SLPs are paid less.

Or are PTs, OTs and SLPs all paid within the same range?

Thank you for any guidelines you can provide.

In our health system, pay is based on " market, " not necessarily on equity

between professions (although we do consider morale effects of our decisions on

pay). It has worked out for us that PT, OT and SLP are paid on the same pay

scales, and PTA and OTA are also equivalent.

But each area of the country is going to have different market conditions. For

example, if you happen to have an OT school nearby, but not PT and SLP, it's

possible you'd need to pay more to attract PT and SLP. This decision ultimately

requires doing or buying some sort of pay survey to decide what's appropriate to

attract and retain good staff.

As a hospital, we do not compare ourselves to private practices, nursing

facilities or to home health. Those are separate markets and therapists tend to

choose their work venue based on factors other than pay. Or conversely if the

therapists are driven by pay we probably cannot compete with those venues. Plus

our benefit package tends to be more generous than competing venues, so pay

alone is not the whole story.
