Guest guest
I would suggest reading your state practice act/statutes in addition to your hospital bylaws. In Florida we have direct access up to 21 days, but after that time we are required to obtain a practitioner of record and that is defined as a practitioner licensed pursuant to specific chapters in the Florida statutes (aka Florida licensed). Jill Piazza, PT, DPT Florida Hospital DeLand > Can anyone tell me if physical therapist can treat patients referred to therapy by an out of state physician? The PT is practicing at a hospital based outpatient clinic in the state of California. We have inquired with medical staff and they were unable to answer as to the medical staff by laws. One of the therapists thinks you can and one says no, can anyone share some law? Thank you > >

Guest guest
As with many answers to questions posted on list servs, your answer depends on your state practice act and administrative rules as well as the insurance companies policies regarding the need for physician orders, who can write them, and can the physician/NPP who ordered the therapy services be from out of state. I would recommend you contact the California Physical Therapy Association.
