Guest guest
Personally I would lean more on getting the wireless unit instead of the wired unit, I grew up wearing the wired one. Wired: There is interference when the teacher is about a foot away from the student, and further you go the more interference there is until there is nothing. Is is clear, but wearing a wired unit you're looking at wires that easily break when you're playing with them, and boots that give you a hard time when they break just as easily. You can't eat or drink when the unit is on the body, and it gets in the way. Wireless: You can be twenty feet away from the student before any interference kicks in, the unit slips easily into a pocket, or can be worn on the belt, or pants, there isn't anything getting in the way, and the boots are sturdier and wears longer then the other boots do. I believe there are two settings where the other one only has one - normal, and more intimate settings, both are fantastic and alot clearer than the wired unit is. Guest guest
I am a little confused ... the FM system has small receivers that attach to his hearing aids - they are about the size of the battery compartment on the hearing aid. The teacher has to wear the microphone, and has to cart the microphone and transmitter from class to class. There have been lots of equipment problems in the three years he has used the system. Sometimes the transmitter doesn't recharge and every element has been found at one time or another to be faulty. The county audiologist is very responsive and concerned, and always takes at his word if he says the sound quality is lacking or absent ). Additionally, the receivers put an extra load on his hearing aid batteries - has been using the system for 7th, 8th and 9th grades so far. Teachers fall into three groups. Some get fairly preoccupied with the equipment, and it sort of becomes another person - or becomes an extension of their idea of . Some make no fuss at all - and even will chat to directly on the sly ). Only one teacher refused to wear it - and the school dealt with that one beautifully! and yes - it has happened that the teachers forget to turn off their microphone and has been in on small private conversations.... ) I wish I were more help - Otherwise, the system really adds alot to 's ability to receive auditory input from the teacher in the classroom. best always- yuka help on fm systems > Help! Guest guest
Michele, You sure need some sleep it sounds like. I have no answers, just more questions? Have you asked your audiologist? We had a student last year on a wireless FM unit in 6th grade. don't know what kind. Problem was he got new hearing aids over the summer before coming to 7th, and they weren't compatible. It took the audiologist weeks to get the right system to work then the jr. hi. boy refused to use it any more because he said he was getting along without it. Long story. Which system would work best with her current aids? My gut reaction as a mom would be wireless too but the audiologist may have to work with the school. Maybe you have already done this. Prayers for some restfull sleep. Blessings and Hugs. Lynn help on fm systems Help! Our school district has me in fits about Aubrie's FM unit. Short story is that we are going to order something new. Guest guest
What about a free field system? That's what Kennedy uses.... Guest guest
Lynn- Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, the audiologist and I have had long discussions. Either system will be compatible with her current aids. She is concerned about compatability if we change aids, but we'd have to work with the hearing aid audiologist to be sure that any future aids would still work with it. Currently, the school aud. is recommending 1) binaural wireless, 2) monaural wireless, 3) binaural wired. The 2nd choice is actually the cheapest and monaural is appropriate for Aubrie given that she has very minimal hearing in her bad ear. If it was my $, I wouldn't pay the extra to FM that ear either. The aid is giving that ear input so it's not being left with nothing. I've also got a recommendation for the wireless coming from our DB specialist so I am hoping that we've got all our ducks in a row. We'll see what tomorrow brings. Add to all this-- our dog had a burst ear drum over the weekend (chronic ear infections) so I took her in Sat. While she was sedated to check her ears, we had some growths removed. She's been scratching out the stitches and was bleeding so we just got done with a house call having her sedated and rebandaged after a check of everything. Yikes. Guest guest
- The free field sounds like a great option and it's been brought up but we've always gone with the personal FM unit. Not sure why the personal unit is prefered though. Perhaps so she has it in all settings and for therapies. Since learning about the free field systems, I've thought all classrooms should have those whether there are hearing impaired kids or not. Guest guest
Lynn- Glad to provide your chuckle for the night :-D Sounds like a great day tomorrow. I look forward to times like that with my adult kids. I got the recommendation letter from the DB specialist. She's great! You know, I forget sometimes to consult her first. She's got the total pic of Aubrie where everyone else considers her from the perspective of any kid. She pointed out the issues with Aubrie's hearing and vision and other difficulties that interfere with moving etc and how the wires and body unit would be an impediment to her where the wireless would allow freedom of movement and less interference. So I think it's going to be fine. Just too bad I have to do so much work to get things done right. Makes you wonder who is the professional here. Aren't they supposed to be figuring out the best thing? I got my hair done today. My hairdresser's son is LD in reading. Years ago I pointed out that books on tape, having tests read to him, etc were options. Of course, she didn't know that. She had just talked with another person with a child in the same situation. Isn't it the LD specialists job to make available all of the resources that can help a child? Instead, they just do the few things the district offers easily and negates to educate the students and parents of other options. Argh!
Guest guest
, I agree. I have a hearing impaired child in my classroom, and I am so excited that my room finally gets an amplification system as it will benefit ALL the kids. I am on both sides of the fence as a parent of a HI kid and as a teacher... G > What about a free field system? That's what Kennedy uses....
