Guest guest
OMG!!! Melvin I can't believe this. I feel so at home now that I actually know someone on the list. A big hug to you. Because I'm on a medical plan do you think I have to have the intern refer me to one? Or can I just set that up my self? Ricky Joe
Guest guest
Welcome ricky, Water exercise is great for anyone. Cutting down on carbs is probably the hardest thing for all of us to do-they taste so good! But losing weight and getting tose sugars down make yu feel wonderful! Newly diagnosed type 2 member Hello, I'd like to introduce myself and ask a couple questions. I'm Ricky Joe Cook and live in St. Helens Oregon with my room mate. I have a floating home on the Columbia River. I'm 49 years old and am totally blind. My blindness is from Congenital Glaucoma. I lost most of my sight when I was young so started out in public school but then transferred to the Washington School for the Blind and later in high school went to the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind. I'm a chef and have my own business as a personal chef and as the executive chef at the Seawright House bed and breakfast here in St. Helens. I was just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 7 weeks ago. I started out on a low dose of Metformin and now am on Metformin twice a day for a maximum dose of 1000 mgs, I'm also taking blood pressure medicines, Cozaar 50 once a day and Hydrochlorothiazide 25mg once a day. I'm just seeing an internist and was wondering if I should see a endocrinologist? I think the doctor I have has me started okay but want to make sure that I'm taking the right medicines so that I can really get my blood glucose levels under control. I'm just a little confused as to how much I should let the internist do and what I should see other specialists for. I'm scheduled to see a dietitian educator for a class on diet on Nov 26th. I've started trying to cut carbs and I'm having a hard time with it but working on that. I'm way overweight so need to loose a good amount. I was wondering how many of you get excercise? I've had guide dogs in the past and got out a lot but in the past few years I haven't done a lot of walking because I'm not good at using a cane and I've taken classes and still suck at mobility with one. Anyway, I was thinking of getting into some sort of water excercise program and am planning on looking into that. Well, I'll close for now sorry for being so long winded Ricky Joe

Guest guest
It depends on your medical plan, some require a referral others don't. I would say to contact them and see what they tell you. Was surprised to see your name come across in this group, but glad you did. Melvin (Mel) Nature delights in diversity, why don't humans. Have a blessed day. Newly diagnosed type 2 member OMG!!! Guest guest
Hi to All: Terrie here again. My blindness is caused from congenital Glaucoma as well. I started out in the British Columbia School for the deaf and blind and I then went out to public high school and did enough interpreting for at least 4 to 8 deaf students in each of my classes that I could ask someone in each class to take notes for me. That was a neat exchange. I still use the ASL I learned so long ago. I learned sign language when I was between 5 and 7 years old. Now that I don't have my vision I can't get my level 6 in ASL. If I could, I would be able to be a lycenced intervener or even a translator. but that will not work as I don't have my vision any longer and can't speak back a question or whatever is needed in a conference setting. Oh, well, I am not as fluent as I once was. I sometimes have to ask what some word signs are. Interesting how lives go. To make this diabetes related, does anyone know if there is any info re the diabetic diet sheet that is given out from a diatition availablein any other format than print? Marie, my GP thinks there should be. We wree talking and I said there should be since there are so many people who lose their sight to diabetes. She thought about that and said yes, you are right. She said she would have to find out why not. that should be interesting. I wonder what will come of that. I will keep you posted. , you know about Marie.
