HUGS, Challis complications from lumbar puncture Hi all,I am in the process of being checked out to see if I have multiplesclerosis and I had an LP on Friday. It all seemed to go fine, but themild post headache turned into a major unbearable headache on Mondayand I had to return to see the doctor who ordered the test. She thinks I may have overdone it afterwards and aggravated things. She gave me a shot of a muscle relaxer and wwhat I now realize is avery mild dosage of Percocet = 3 day supply. I am to call her if I donot get better and to lie flat except for going to the bathroom. She said that if it doesn't resolve, I may have a cerebral spinalfluid leak and need a "blood patch".Well, it does not seem to be resolving, although I no longer have theabsolutely splitting headache I had on Monday, it is still pretty badwhen the pain meds run out of my system. I also have a low backacheand stomach ache.I have an MRI of the thoracic spine scheduled for Saturday and acouple visual tests scheduled too all towards ascertaining if I haveMS. The brain MRI revealed 4 lesions on my brain, but they were notall in the place that would be expected for MS. I understand tho, that4 is a pretty significant amount.Should I ask them to do the MRI of my lumbar spIne too? Not that theywill listen!I cannot do anything, even write too many emails, let alone work. Icould talk on the phone but I am not up to it. But need advice. Guest guest
I've only gotten as far as Kami and Dana's... I want to believe these things are tremendously rare. I haven't had my LP yet. Tell us it's like butterflies and rainbows. ROFL HUGS, Challis Re: complications from lumbar puncture , I am so sorry you are having such a bad spinal headache. I had an LP not too long ago and I too ended up with a horrendous headache, backache, nausea. It lasted about 3 days. I chose not to do the blood patch -- but in retrospect should have! -- believe it or not - I felt way to bad to even go in to the dr to get it done! Here is what helped me most though. Lay flat as much as possible. Drink lots of fluids. If you can tolerate caffeine - drink it This really helped me (I know, drink lots of coffee then lay down, hee hee). I know it is miserable, but it WILL pass. And if it doesn't get better, then get that blood patch. Guest guest
Thank you all, I am on the mend, I believe. My back is still sore when I move around alot, and that could just be my back anyway. Hard to say. My head starts to hurt just a bit when I move around alot, but it is nothing I would even hardly notice if I was not in this situation monitoring it. I have been out of work the entire week. I wanted to try to go into work today but my family " won " , and I am home resting for one more day. I get the spinal MRI tomorrow. The visual evoked potential test was to be this past Tuesday, but it will now be the 24th, the same day and just before I get my results for all the tests. Thanks for all the experiences, tips and encouragement. It's sad all the conflicting information given to patients by the same institutions and even the same office (!)- sometimes without even bothering to look up what you have been told by other medical professionals. It's shameful really. Sincerely, > > Hi and Challis!I am glad you wrote this email Challis. It was on > my top in the inbox.Im so behind,I dont know when I woulda seen s > email. > I did have a horrible LP.I needed a patch but the university doc told > me I could see any doc for it.So,instead of going to UCD were Id have > to wait 5 hrs.Which I could not sit up at all and I was vomiting.I went > to a local ER and they couldnt do the blood patch cuz they didnt know > were the leak was,I was poked 5 times! And the whole time the fluid was > leaking all over me.I had to be pushed out in a wheelchair and the > whole time I was screaming. The Local Er gave me Reglan and Percoset and > it helped alot but I still had to lay flat cuz it was unbearable.Im so > sorry for what you are going through I know it hurts so bad. When we > left the er I called the UCD neuro and told of what happened and how > the doc said to call and I would need a patch.Well, she couldnt get me a > bed and id have to wait in there er and she I could wait it out and it > would be ok.WTH! Guest guest
I feel so bad for you. I have had 2 LPs so far. My doctor had to poke me multiple times on both to find the "right spot". Fortunately he used the smallest needle possible to reduce the after effects. After both I came home and drank a pot of coffee and I was lucky enough to only have a mild headache. Hang in there.Smyelin groovy wrote: {{{{{{{{}}}}}}}} Oh, I'm so sorry. Our sweet Cassy had a nasty time after her LP, too. Guest guest
Hi ! I am so happy you are feeling a lil better!! I was so worried after I read your email. An LP that goes bad in my opinion was worse then giving birth to my children. And they were 9 and 10 lbs! Lol. I will never have another. Even if they say its life or death! Lol. I know some dont have such a bad experience but for those that do it is heartbreaking really. Sure,it only lasts a wk but its pure hell till it eases up. Im happy your family won, another day of rest will really help. Take care k. And hang in there! luv n hugz, cassy Re: complications from lumbar puncture & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; {{{{{{{{}}}}}}}} Oh, I'm so sorry. Our sweet Cassy had a nasty & gt; time after her LP, too.
