Guest guest
You are absolutely right, Dave. That is why diabetes is such an individual disease. Re: question about carbs I would add to Dan's comments by saying, that along with the fact that all of us are different, not only between type 1 and type 2, but in age, gender, activity level/life style, length of time as a diabetic, etc., that weight management is also a major consideration. Indeed, as a type 1, I can eat a piece of pie, or eat something extra, and cover it with a little extra insulin. If I am healthy, or active, this is more acceptable. However, for an older, and less healthy diabetic, and in particular, one who is over weight, this is probably not an advisable practice. Dave God doesn't hate sinners, just sin! question about carbs The nutrition advice given that says over 200 g of carbs is the target is a common problem in diabetes treatment. The reason given was that many would not eat less. This means the standard of care is being set at the worst case level rather then setting it at the level likely to provide optimal results. Too often doctors take a similar path. They will accept an a1c of 7 as ok when knowing that the current research based advice says 6 should be the worst case number. Both result in many more diabetics then would otherwise have better results are getting complications and are being misled by the complacency of the advice giver. They should be pushing not enabling poor results. I once read a doctor's advice that if your doctor is not yelling at you about your poor results then you should be yelling at your doctor. The problem is that the customer is not being told results are poor and complications are the price they pay. There is another prroblem with the carb advice. It is almost useless to set a standard number as a target given the range of individual reactions to the same number of carbs. One should rather set a post meal number for blood glucose which will then on average result in an effective a1c over time. One relies on the meter to tell us how many carbs of what kind result in what post meal number. One then adjusts that carb content of that kind of food accordingly until the post meal target is matched. XB IC|XC
Guest guest
Ricky, So glad you are questioning that woman. I can't believe and dietician would recommend that many carbs. You were smart in eating what you did for Thanksgiving and I give you a lot of credit for cutting down on the carbs. We all blow it once in while. I'm sure I ate that many crbs on thanksgiving, but I can cover it with insulin as I am a type 1. I try to eat only about 90 caarbs a day so I don't have to take so much insulin. question about carbs Hi all, I saw the dietician on Wednesday and we were talking about carbs and she recommended eating 75 gm of carbs per meal or a total daily amount of 225 gms of carbs. This seemed like a lot to me since I'd been reading that 30 to 50 carbs per meal were best. When I asked her about that she said that her experience was that her clients usually couldn't stick with that low amount of carbs. What do all of you think. I showed her my bg log and she said that I was doing a pretty good job of getting them down. She said that my first A1C was 10.6 and from the readings it looked like my reading for my next test which should be coming up probably would be in the 8 range which she said was a good drop for a two month period. Of course I want to get it down in the normal range if possible and know its going to take a lot of work and support to do that. I didn't go to my friends house for Thanksgiving because I wasn't sure what they were going to be having because someone other than my friend was doing the shopping and cooking. I wanted to try to keep up the healthy eating. My partner and I got a turkey breast, I did make stuffing but used a organic wholewheat stuffing that had a low carb amount. I fixed regular mashed potatoes for my partner and I made mock mashed potatoes out of cauliflower. I got a sugar free apple pie and had just a small piece. I tested before bed last night and had a reading of 139 and again this morning fasting test was 120 which I know aren't great readings but much better than the 200 ones I was getting in the beginning.
