Guest guest
A neighbor of mine has asked me to help them research Spinal Injury Rehab Centers in the United States. His son is 24 and was traveling from Davenport to Des Moines last Friday when traffic came to a complete standstill on I80. Because his car had just crested a hill, traffic behind him was unaware of the stoppage and a semi crested the hill and was unable to stop. His son was life flighted to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines and underwent surgery to rework his T3/pin the vertebrae back in place? He has about 9 days of recovery left before they move him on to a Spinal Rehab Facility. At this point the hosptial staff is recommending Craig Hospital Spinal Cord Injury facility in Englewood, CO. At this point I would like ask the following: 1. Has anyone on this list been involved with Craig's Hospital? If so, what can you tell me about their facility, staff, outcomes? 2. Are there any other facilities that this family should be looking at for Spinal Cord Injury Rehab? I think they would like to hear about Midwestern locations, but they are open to going where the best results can be achieved. Thank you, Jim <///><

Guest guest
As many have pointed out there are some top notch facilities that warrent looking into. As a CARF surveyor, I would direct your friend to the CARF website. Here they can find all CARF accredited spinal cord systems of care. There are approximately 80. The reality is that all of these programs undergo extensive review and need to meet very strict standards of care. A smaller, less known program may be as effective as the " big " names. The key would be for the family to tour and get a feel of the staff and philosphy of the program. Ask about their outcome data and average length of stay. Ask the young man himself if if would be more improtant to him to be closer to home and friends or in a center far from home with bells and whistles. Each patient with a spinal cord injury must be looked at as an individual with individual needs for optimal recovery. All of those factors combined will make for the best outcome, not necessarilty the facility with the most name recognition. Just my two cents > > > > A neighbor of mine has asked me to help them research Spinal Injury Rehab Centers in the United States.
