Would anyone care to comment on how they are billing for stretching,

strengthening and limb management techniques, functional training, without the

prosthesis, etc in a pre-prosthetic patient, e.g trans tibial?

How would it change, if at all, for someone with whom you are doing all that as

well as beginning actual gait training with the prosthesis?

Are you using the code CPT 97761- Prosthetic training? Or are you using ther

ext 97110, ther Act 9750 and Gait 97116, recognizing that using 97761 would

require a -59 modifier on several of the other codes.

We are getting somewhat contradictory information between the CPT definitions

and our LCD for the use of 97761. I had been taught in one of my coding and

billing that the prosthetic training 97761 was really inclusive of ALL those

activities, even if you were not doing prosthetic training yet.- it was all

pre-prosthetic. Our LCD is instructing us to use Gait training 97116 for

prosthetic gait training and to use 97761 only for Pre-prosthetic ther ex and

functional training.

Thank you for your comments.

Per CPT Assistant February 2007, prosthetic training includes preparation of the

stump, strengthening of the remaining musculature, modification of prosthetic

fit sing stump socks or socket liners, mobility training, use during functional

activities as well as skin care and overall conditioning. Once a patient begins

gait training with the prosthesis, it is appropriate to report such training

with 97116.
