Guest guest
We have to carry suture removal trays (stitch and staple) in home health. It's usually nursing but could hit PT. Occurs when they go to office and the staples just need a few more days. I would guess it's more frequent in Home Health where patient is homebound and office visits are taxing effort. Nursing had to show me some tricks of the trade. Not sure how the agency gets around it not being in the PT plan of care since it's a physician order but not in our specific plan of care. Guest guest
Lori, We always have a staple remover kit in the department as some Dr.'s will miss one from time-time. We never had a policy for this, but this was not routine either. I had no problem doing this for the patient or for the physician. Guest guest
What ever happened to the tradition of a surgeon seeing a patient post-op, removing the staples and checking his surgical craftsmanship and incision? Guest guest
I do not think this QUESTION is a matter of who can do it (as we all have the skill to remove staples), it is a matter of who should remove them based on responsibility. Otherwise, we may be placing ourselves needlessly in the realm of " liability " OR as a profession do we continually do things out of the goodness of our physical therapy hearts without reimbursement. It is a fine line between doing what is best for an individual and practicing withing our current scope of practice.
