Hi , I'm Vicki, and I've been diabetic for 3 years, learned lots here,

and everyone is friendly. Ask questions if you like and hang around, it's a good

place to be.

Hi ,

As a diabetic, you should begin having a number of blood tests performed about

every 3 months by a lab at your doctor's request. One of these is the a1c,

which as Pat mentioned, is a measure of how well (or not so well) you've been

managing your blood sugar levels. But, because you have diabetes, there are

other things that need to be monitored such as kidney function, liver enzyme

levels, and your red blood cell (or hemoglobin) level, just to name a few of

them.

If your doctor doesn't believe you need such things, look for a different

doctor, or try to have him/her refer you to a diabetic doctor (endocrinologist).

16:23)

Welcome ,

I am from CA, formerly from Ohio. I have been type 1 diabetic for 64 years.

If you have any questions, there are many people who can help yu out. Are

you taking meds? Do youknow what your A1C is?

Hi Becky,

Welcome to the list! I'm 27 and have also had type 1 diabetes for over 17

years. There are a few long-term type 1s on this list, most who have had it

for much longer than I have! I use an insulin pump to manage my diabetes.

That must be really amazing to be essentially cured of diabetes after so

long! Do you still have to test your blood sugar at all just to check?
