Healthy Choices

You Can Enjoy the Buffet!

It's the most wonderful time of the year, but it's also the season of

overindulgence and weight gain. With holiday parties and goodies around the

office, it's hard to resist the temptation. This year, enjoy your treats,

but make sure that

<http://main.diabetes.org/site/R?i=zohLxPfRdKxeEOiIg_5Wlw..> the food you

prepare at home - and choose at parties - is healthy and well-balanced. From

appetizers to desserts,

<http://main.diabetes.org/site/R?i=6YdF2XXLxv_T2-DB3qN8YQ..> healthy choices

abound.

Look to the <http://main.diabetes.org/site/R?i=TDHX0HYGnAoyK9oXZuW4Yw..>

vegetables in season for nutritious side dishes, and

<http://main.diabetes.org/site/R?i=ZGG9LZ8AXCYDCLugKEu24w..> fall fruits for

salads and desserts. Cheeses are ubiquitous at holiday buffet tables, and

our <http://main.diabetes.org/site/R?i=wTcl_rbHQ-yOQxQPX7_ORw..> cheese

guide can help you make the best choices. Dips are also popular, and we are

offering great ways for you to

<http://main.diabetes.org/site/R?i=3apek8SdPbI0QCJD3ru1IQ..> " skinny-dip for

the holidays " with flavorful, calcium-rich, party-pleasing

<http://main.diabetes.org/site/R?i=DSdE70FlB1_zAlrg_TblVw..> yogurt dips

that won't tip the scales!

Finally, for a new twist on those sugary, high-fat Christmas cookies, we

suggest <http://main.diabetes.org/site/R?i=pk-lwafd727oNDItnGsuaA..>

biscotti, an Italian classic. This crisp, crunchy cookie is perfect for

dipping in coffee or dessert wine or even simply for snacking. Because they

don't need to be moist, biscotti are naturally low in fat. So dip, crunch

and be healthy!

Live Your Life

The Balancing Act of

<http://main.diabetes.org/site/R?i=kNLQ_waici_pmrXFHDEEmg..> Alcohol

The holidays often bring special occasions where alcohol is served. Having

diabetes doesn't necessarily mean you need to avoid the beverage table. If

you have diabetes and want to

<http://main.diabetes.org/site/R?i=zz6JEIP3APLfEMQgKhaELg..> drink alcohol,

there are a few steps to take to keep yourself safe:

* Check with your health care team about

whether it is safe for you to drink alcohol. For example, if you have

neuropathy, drinking alcohol can worsen your symptoms.

* Always eat food if you drink an alcoholic

beverage. Alcohol is processed differently than food and can cause low blood

glucose levels. Because of the calories in alcoholic beverages, many people

try to cut back on their food intake. This is a mistake and can increase

your risk of severe

<http://main.diabetes.org/site/R?i=O_mqWp6AdGPOXPmxQH2F3Q..> hypoglycemia -

particularly if you take insulin or a pill that lowers blood glucose levels.

* When possible, use sugar-free mixers like

diet tonic water, light cranberry juice or diet sodas.

* Stick to the rules for no more than 2

drinks per day for a man and 1 drink per day for a woman (A drink is 12

ounces of beer, 1 1/2 ounces of distilled spirits or 5 oz of wine).

* To stay safe,

<http://main.diabetes.org/site/R?i=A4uAplnTaL3nKz49p40Dpg..> check your

blood glucose levels to see how alcohol affects you on the night of the

event and the next day.
