Dave,

Sara Meeks is a great place to start. I'm not sure if she is doing any CE

anymore, but she has published several books and the information is

valuable. APTA had a CE program of hers on CD several years ago.

I have coordinated community education with a pharmacist, registered

dietician and either nurse practitioner or physician. It helps to work

along with others who are also passionate about osteoporosis education and

prevention.

The National Osteoporosis Foundation website has great information also.

We have 3 therapists that have taken the Meeks courses and have developed

" Standing Tall " classes.

This is a small group (usually 6-8 folks), that pay out of pocket for the 6

week-1 hour course. We do a ½ hour education component (what osteoporosis does,

how to adapt ADLs etc) and then walks them through the Meeks series of

recommended exercises (decompression etc). Even one of the nutritionists comes

for one session to talk about diet and supplements.

Everyone must have a diagnosis of osteopenia or osteoporosis, have been cleared

to take the course by their primary MD, and everyone must be mobile enough to

get up and down from the floor for exercises independently.

We have been doing this for about two years and it has been a great success.

Most patients are very grateful for the education piece especially. We often

have a waiting list for the next class. It's not a great money maker but it is a

great community outreach.

Any info you could provide would be beneficial as I feel there is a need for it.

Thanks.
