I just went back and added my lines over the last hour and I have 297, and I

have been typing at a reasonably calm rate. I didn't think that seemed so

fast, but maybe it is. Good to know.

The heck with breaking the " ceiling " .. I want to know how you got to 250 to 300

lines per hour!!!! I'm not a machine, so I can't go that fast. Besides, my

employer is more concerned about quality than quantity, thank goodness.

line count ceiling--how do I break it?!!

Hi,

I've been an MT for just over 1-1/2 years now and can't seem to break the

250-300 lines (65 cpl) per hour ceiling! I worked for a radiology

department with about 60 different doctors and residents. Anyone else

seem to get stuck at a ceiling like this? Any tips or hints about how to

get faster from here? I'm doing everything I know how to do for speed,

but can't seem to get faster than this. I use macros, a word expander,

autocorrect, etc. Suggestions anyone?

Thanks!

Well, that's encouraging to hear :-). I think it's because I do

radiology--very little to no drugs, so very little slows me down on most

reports. Even with interventional radiology it's rare that I have to stop

and look anything up. I hear of people that do 400+ lines a day and

thought that was the standard :-). Guess not! LOL!

My employer is also highly concerned about quality over quantity. My last

QA quarterly run-through landed me 100 points out of 100, so I'm not

sacrificing quality! Do you think that people who say they're doing 400+

lines per hour are big fat liars or just sloppy? :-)

Thanks for the input!

Oh yes... having done both radiology and medical records transcription, I

think they are horses of different colors :) It is much easier to get a

higher line count with radiology transcription. Did you mean 400+ lines a

day or an hour?

Please don't misunderstand, I didn't mean that in a bad way whatsoever and I

did not mean to infer that a higher line count automatically means quality

is sacrificed. Personally when I speed up too much, sometimes I make more

mistakes, but I'm very careful to proofread. We are all different, of

course, and I know there are real speed demons out there who put me to

shame. It might interest you to know that my employer has a minimum of 900

lines a day, or 112.5 lines per hour. Of course, as I've mentioned in other

emails, our reports are randomly checked by quality auditors. If an MT can

fly along like that and have good quality, I say " you go girl!!! " :) I'm

just not one of those people.. 112.5 lines per hour is a nice comfortable

level for me.. but of course it depends on the doctors I get and the

difficulty of the reports, how many words I have to look up, and how many

times I have to pull out BOS or email my " cubicle " buddies when I'm in doubt

as to the proper way to transcribe something :)

Yes, you definitely get a lot higher line count with radiology,

especially if there are a lot of normals! You can easily get 2 x a

line count from radiology that you can with normal reports........

I have heard that too, and even up into the 600s. In my DREAMS!

It's gotta be a combination of tons of shortcuts, templates, macros, experience,

being familiar with docs, and probably sheer talent. I could NEVER do 400 lph.

I'm not even close. Okay, maybe if I had ONE easy dictator who I did every day

and who said the same thing over and over, then okay, LOL!

They certainly have my respect, whoever they are!

Hey, 344 lines your first day on a new job as a new grad isn't bad!! You do get

faster, though at my rate, it will be the year 2053 before I reach 400 lph.

This should make you feel like your as fast as lightning.

I started with MedQuist yesterday. Today was my first full day

transcribing (mush mouths I might add) and I felt great doing 344

lines in the whole entire day <ggg>. I think I made a whole $17.00

today. Go ahead you can laugh, I am.

Okay, I am finally going to jump in here. I tried earlier, but the server at

work went down, so I lost what I was typing. I am a hospital employee with all

of the benefits, including being paid by the hour, which is wonderful. Until

about 2 months ago, our production was always measured by minutes of dictation

rather than lines, so I didn't have any idea how to judge what y'all were

talking about. Our new production rate is 150 lines per hour or 1200 lines day.

We get incentive pay over 175 lph or 1400 lines per day, with a graduated scale,

getting the most if we type over 250 lph or 2000 lpd. When I only work an hour

or two, I think I once did type somewhere close to 300 lines in one hour, but

that was really pushing and not doing anything but type for that solid hour. I

usually type around 1800-1900 lpd and would sure love to start breaking that

2000 lpd where I would earn the extra money, but just can't seem to do it. I

find that I can only sustain a high rate for a few hours or sometimes for a few

nights, but the incentive is based on the average over two weeks, so I'm still

not getting the big bucks.

Anyway, for anyone who is managing to type those great amounts, we would sure

like to hear from you as to how in the world you do it and do you manage to keep

it up over a 2 week period on a consistent basis? Just my experience, even if

it is only for a couple of months, and in the summer when I don't have as much

energy with the heat and humidity anyway, Margaret

I know that feeling! During my first couple of days on MedQuist, I kept

thinking, " What have I

I think it definitely has to do with how many docs you do, what kind of

reports you're doing, what specialty, how many times a week you do the same

doc over and over again, plus other factors. My quality is excellent and I

vary from doc to doc. My best is 450 an hour but that has very large macros

(incredibly large and I don't charge him as much for that reason). He's

also a very smooth dictator, never backs up and always shuts off the

recorder when he's thinking (or whatever he's doing), so there are no large

spaces of pauses. This makes a big difference. But everything is a letter

and sometimes that takes extra time if it's a new address and I have to find

it. I have one that has a lot of word expanders but he constantly goes back

and changes things which really slows you down. It's down to 250 with him.

So, it all depends. I did 2600 lines today but that was flying and with

great dictators and that included printing. But I had to so it could be

delivered and my arms are tired! :) I think there are just too many

variables to compare and, of course, each time you get a new doc, you're

going to have a lower line count until you get used to him. For those who

work in a hospital, I imagine that's a real downfall. If you're enjoying

your work and making what you need to, and have good quality - then be

happy and proud. :)

and changes things which really slows you down.

Hi ,

Don't feel bad. I just got my first paycheck, for three days' work, a

whopping $57.00

!!! Woo-woo! I'm doing transcription of conference calls though, and I

only did one call a day for those days. My next paycheck should be closer

to $600, and I hope it keeps going up.

The problem I seem to have is that when I first start in the morning, I'm

sluggish, then I get good about the time the second cup of coffee kicks in,

and stay good for two or three hours. It's like all I have to do is think

the word, and it happens on the screen, without my consciously directing my

fingers. After that, it's like my brain goes numb, and my shoulders and the

backs of my hands stiffen up. I keep typing like a dyslexic, using the

backspace key as much as all the others combined. My speed drops WAY off by

the end of the day. When I'm good, a four-minute segment takes me 15 to 20

minutes to type, depending on the speakers. When my brain goes numb, the

same segment takes me half an hour. A couple of nights, I was up until past

1:00 in order to finish. It was like a form of torture!

I'm not doing MT yet, but I'm still lurking and learning, and taking heart

from all the encouragement other recent grads get. Thanks, everybody, for

continuing to be so positive!

<snip> Rennie da slow poke!

Being the eternal optimist, it can only get better!!!!!

Slower poke than Rennie
