I certainly don't know the exact percentages, but prior to surgery your body was capable of and actually absorbed some fairly high percentage of the nutrients available in a given quantity of food. Postoperatively, if you were to consume the same quantity of food your body could not harvest anywhere near the same variety and amount of nutrients. Presumably, the vitamins are just another " food. " To absorb postoperatively the same range and quantities from a vitamin tablet as preoperatively it is necessary ... to consume more vitamins.
