Guest guest
Heidi, I must tell you, like the teachers I am dealing with now, they think that because your child is wearing hearing aids or an implant that they hear just fine. If your child needs to work on audition/ listening skills, have those written into their speech IEP. Hang in there. You aren't the only one. Guest guest
You might try taking printed info about what hearing aids do and don't do for the teacher to read and keep for reference. The Beginnings website has a lot of info for teachers and classroom modifications. Many people don't know that hearing aids don't work just like ears! Here's the website link: http://www.beginningssvcs.com/ You will find a lot of good info under " school issues " - there is a pull down menu with several categories! Good luck! Guest guest
Oh yes, she has had an IEP for five years. But I'm sure this teacher has had no prior experience working with a HI child. So...what has her teacher for the deaf and hi been doing? Apparently nothing. So...I have some materials, things I've copied off Kay's website. I'm bringing those to our conference/IEP. Thanks, Heidi
Guest guest
Heidi...You aren't the only one. My kindergartener just received her report card 2 week ago. In kindergarten they give " S " (satisfactory) " S- " (not mastered) " N " (needs improvement, etc) You get the picture. My daughter, profound in the right ear(unaided) and mixed moderate/severe in the left aided with HA and FM, was given S- in " speaks clearly " DUH and " works independantly " because she has an interpreter. Now...come on. My daughter may never speak clearly by hearing standards and she is being penalized because she has an interpreter???? Luckily, her HI teacher realized how ridiculous this was and spoke with the kindergarten teacher. We'll see how the next grading period goes. Good Luck!!! Guest guest
I hope this doesn't sound uncaring or oblivious, but whats wrong with an " S " in those areas? ~Rhonda Sorry...I guess I didn't make my post very clear. She got an S- because as the teacher put it, " I really didn't know what else to put since she doesn't really speak clearly and she gets help from an interpreter. " I do have to say that on the report card it does have a space under " speaks clearly " where you check if she is in therapy or not.
