Guest guest
Pam, Add me to the list of people for whom this would be a concern. I definitely want to have children someday (not soon, but not 10 years from now either!). << I can't believe that and Stevie are the only ones for whom this might be a concern.... >>
Guest guest
Stevie, The impression we got from talking to Dr. R is that there is a real danger of tragic birth defects in children if post-op patients become pregnant without having prepared ahead of time. In particular he mentioned the Folic Acid deficiency which causes children to be born without a brain (how's that for a shocking mental image). This can occur in women who haven't had the surgery too. In fact, recently there have been several reports on the importance of folic acid (same as Folate?) in the diets of anyone who is sexually active because of the possibility of an unplanned pregnancy. Dr. R said that most problems (birth defects etc.) would occur before a woman knew positively that she was pregnant....the damage would already have been done. The recommended wait I've seen most is 18-24 months to give the body time to adjust and to have stabilized at a set weight. I think too that a pregnancy would be considered " high risk " due to the potential mal-nutrition factor to the baby. Somewhere in all my Internet surfing I saw information on this, but now I can't locate it....It seems like normal pregnancy with safe delivery and healthy baby is common IF the expectant mom is monitored closely and is put on extra vitamin supplements....... That's about the sum of all I remember seeing. If anyone else has more info. please post it. I can't believe that and Stevie are the only ones for whom this might be a concern.... I love this group!!! It's like one big sorority (with a brother fraternity attached).....maybe we should design a crest and motto! After all we do have a graphics expert amongst us....Thanks for the name tags, by the way! Post MGB and Pregnancy? >From: stevie@... Guest guest
hi, I also asked Dr. Rutledge about pregnancy after the surgery and he specifically mentined the Folic Acid deficiency, and the birth defects associated with it, he strongly stressed the dangers of an unplanned pregnancy. My understanding was that a pregnancy must be planned and monitored, to ensure the proper vitamin levels. I would also love to hear if anyone has located any info on this. thanks, Roxanne
Guest guest
Stevie-- I think Dr R thinks you should wait at least a year after surgery, but I know people on here have posted about successful pregnancies after surgery. There was actually a woman at one meeting I went to who had surgery (open) about 10 years ago and she had a young child with her, in addition to her teenager. You probably have to watch your nutrition, but you have to do that anyway when you're pregnant. Katy
Guest guest
Just remember you have a couple of years on .....10 years down the road is soon enough for me to be a grandmother ....HaHa! By then I can be one of those " sexy " grandmas....I can see it now: Going to Grandparent's Day at school dressed in leather hot pants and a halter.......hopping off the back of Harley Sportster, helmet in hand.....just kidding....maybe the hot pants will be velvet instead of leather. Guest guest
Beth, As you well know they may as well add me to the " WANT A BABY " list! I do have a 13 year old son but have wanted another child for many many years. I am hopeful that after getting my weight down and stable that I will be fortunate enough to have one! Most people look at me like I am crazy when I say I want another -- Mainly because my son is 13, guess they wonder why I'd want to start all over again! From what I have read the main concern seems to be nutritional, making sure you get enough folic acid and vitamins ect. Looking forward to see if Dr. R has any other comments on this subject. Also, Dr. R use to have links on his web page regarding WLS and pregnancy, haven't checked in a while to see if they were still there.
