Guest guest
I think if you want to ADD this to your schedule it's too much. You have to sleep sometime. It's possible to do 45 minutes in three hours, but only if they are really, really good dictators and/or you are very familiar with them and/or you have years of experience, which, like me, you don't! I wouldn't add it if I were you. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Webmedx employee Career Step graduate, 10/02/01 Experience: 11 months My Home Page: http://www.renesue.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Job Offer Hi, One of the nationals offered me a job. The problem is I have a full time job at a hospital and an account that I share with a friend that I do on the weekends. This company has a minimum requirement of 45 minutes of dictation five days a week. Without knowing what these dictators are going to sound like, I really don't feel that I have any way of knowing how long 45 minutes will take. I only have a year and a half experience and I'm not that fastest. I can work three hours a day but not a minute longer. I am not in desperate need of money. Your opinions would be appreciated. Guest guest
If you can answer the following questions " yes, " you should definitely accept this position: 1. Are you a masochist? 2. Do you need additional stress in your life? 3. Do you have absolutely NOTHING to do in your waking hours besides transcription? (I.e., no obligations, no hobbies, no LIFE)? If you answered any of these questions " no, " you should reject the position. Jayni This e-mail has been scanned with Norton Antivirus updated no more than 12 hours ago. Guest guest
Listen to everyone! Take it from me.....I had several hours a day and looked for another account. Who would know that all the accounts would grow? Who could know that one doctor would be a big pain in the butt and get behind in his dictation? And therefore mess up every day of my life for weeks on end? I don't have a life anymore and I can't find anyone in my area who is willing to actually work and give me quality work. I have been in contact with MTs who have supposedly worked for nine years and they don't use abbreviation expanders or macros. Who can make money that way? They don't know what MT periodicals are. They claim they need work but will only take one tape on Friday (and that tape consists of maybe 400 lines). Be very careful what you wish for. I worked ten hours today and that didn't include the laundry I did, the dinner I cooked, the daughters I saw and/or talked to, the phone calls I took, and seven of those were about rescheduling my youngest daughter's MRI! We're not even touching on the lack of time with Hubby! Think long and hard. If you can, great, just don't spread yourself too thin. Money is great and the satisfaction we get from our jobs is so fantastic but you have to take care of you too! No one else will. But, several years ago, I wouldn't have listened either. Good luck whatever you decide to do. Job Offer > > Hi, > One of the nationals offered me a job. Guest guest
I found this very interesting! I live in Vermont and assumed that it was because I was out here in the sticks that I never met a local MT who knew about expanders, Stedman's word books (no, I'm NOT kidding!), and web sites that one could look up words on. (That was a terrible run-on sentence, I know!) Looks like it's not a Vermont problem, huh? This just amazes me! I've been about a dozen MTs so far, and not ONE of them knew about any of the above. They all wonder how I can be so " fast " and produce such " high quality " work. Just a few hours of research time on the web would tell them all they need to know, but they are NOT interested. Guest guest
I'd give this a resounding YES. I've mostly met with blank stares when I've mentioned expanders and anything more than basic dictionaries in the way of books. The sad thing is that most are not interested in learning how to do Internet searches, use expanders, etc. HOWEVER, most of these people work in doctors' offices and are paid by the hour! Guest guest
Do y'all suppose this phenomenon has anything to do with the quirk in the trend line for MT jobs a couple of years ago when, at least here locally, the hospital and the large practices started contracting out all their MT work rather than employ full-time transcriptionists? The feedback I got from acquaintances was that the offices could get a higher-quality product at a lower cost through a service than through full-time employees. The trend has changed again, with the hospital again employing staff transcriptionists, both to work on site and to work off site, and at least one local practice (if I understand this correctly) growing a transcription service of their own that does only their work but is a separate entity. Guest guest
, I am a relatively new person at MT, but how are you going learn anything if you're (your hire-ee) not willing to look things up? Only after I have searched through my drug books and the internet, then I ask one of you (my cubicle buddies) and if I still cannot find it, then I leave a blank. It amazes me that there are people out there that want what you have but are not willing to do the footwork. Sorry for the babbling but I just had to speak out on this. I know this discussion was on earlier this morning but my internet was down. On top of that, she's worked as a MT for nine years, she says, but she has no idea what expanders or macros are! How is that possible? How can anyone make any money without utilizing the tools of the trade? She also does not know about any MT periodicals. To me, these are people who treat this as a hobby. It's unbelievable! The woman I've been training for THREE years, does not spend the time she should checking resources. She doesn't go online at all. I have given her every book she has. She still isn't as good as she should be but she's better. Unfortunately most of her errors are very stupid English errors that tell me she is not proofreading her work even though she says she is. Guest guest
I switched from the MT program at a local community college in St. Louis to M-TEC for these same reasons. I had almost finished the program when I was hired at a local hospital as an MT in the pathology lab and found myself woefully unprepared, but I didn't learn much from the MT of 16 years who worked in the office. She knew nothing of expanders, macros, and/or references outside of the ancient pathology word book and dictionary the hospital provided. The MT program at the college didn't provide that kind of information either. The only references I learned about there were the BOS and The Medical Word Book and that program was run by a woman who was head of allied health services at a large St. Louis hospital and had been an MT herself for many years. I have to credit this list (and one or two others) for enlightening me on the vast amount of references and tools for MTs. Dawn C. Guest guest
Now we're cooking!! Thanks, ! But we all have to make a group promise that if we apply to get work from someone here and we don't pass their test or they don't use us for whatever reason, that we cannot be all pissy about it, okay? And the biz owner that doesn't use one of us for whatever reason has to promise not to say anything ugly on the list about the person, okay? We might get a good thing going here if we are all adult about it and behave and everything. This is great!!
