Guest guest
My 4 1/2 year old son has a very high copper level. We are currently using zinc and molybdenum to get his copper levels down. The posts say you cannot chelate with high copper. Is there anything else we should be using? Can someone tell me when you can start chelation. Do we need to hair test again? Thanks Marilyn

ALA tends to reduce copper excretion, so, in your case, this would be " bad " , since you have a copper problem to begin with. So, you should hold off on use of ALA. You can use DMSA or DMPS in the meantime, if you wish to. Also, restrict copper foods (nuts and organ meats). If you have not checked all supplements for copper, do that also. Some have copper in them. > Is there anything else we should be using? Can > someone tell me when you can start chelation. Do we need to hair test > again? I have been wondering that too. I'm not sure how else you would know...... best, Moria
Guest guest
My sons been taking zinc 30mg /day for over a year and is still at 1700 something when the upper ended limit is 1400 something. I guess it's not working . . . . >>> danasview@... 7/6/2005 9:40:27 AM >>> > Can anyone tell me how long it takes to bring copper levels down once > the source is removed? I can't answer your specific question, but if you give zinc, that will lower the copper levels. Do we need to hair test Hi Marilyn, See archived message 56572 for suggestions from Andy. You could try using onibasu.com to search for glycine, taurine, andrewhallcutler to see more posts in the same vein. I believe you can start DMSA chelation with high copper and the DMSA might be somewhat useful for lowering copper. I think DMPS is neutral for copper. ALA can cause your body to retain both copper and zinc and so ALA chelation should be avoided or done infrequently while high in copper. I think if you search the archives, Andy says that high copper is one of the few cases where he DOES recommend repeating hair tests - approximately every 3 months to see if copper is too high. Guest guest
How big is your son? It was recommended that my 40 lb son take 60 mgs/day of zinc. Perhaps you can mess with the form of zinc you use AND add Molybdenum to help purge the copper. The serum ratio of zinc/copper is supposed to be about 1:1 from what I recall. Do you know what your son's ratio is and where it stands after 1 year of zinc supplementation? I am assuming you mean copper levels remain at 1700 (and not zinc)? What was tested to get that number (blood, urine, hair)? My son's serum copper is at 160 ug/dL and his zinc is at 60 ug/dL. Our reference range for copper is listed as 70-155 (Labcorp). Guest guest
Hi Pam..It is good to see a friend from the A/P list here. I hope that you are feeling better and that things are going well with Ian.
