Guest guest
I am a lurker however whenever I see a subject that is of interest I comment so here is my two cents on methadone. From 1997 to 2002 I had been on a variety of pain meds including oxycontin, and those like it, and from 2002 my former pain doc and I settled on vicodin and towards the end I was on upwards of 8-12 tabs of vicodin (10/325) until I switched pain docs. I had to change doctors because he would not complete one particular form required for my Work Comp case, and in the beginning of September of 2007 I interviewed (yes I interviewed him to make sure he would work with my surgeon and complete the required paperwork) he decided to take me completely off vicodin " cold turkey " and he switched me to Methadone 5-10 mg. I was scared out of my mind because of the withdrawal from the vicodin and he reassured me that not only would the methadone control my pain but it would also control any withdrawal symptoms and he was right on both fronts. At the same time of this switch my second back surgery (first low back implant-Synthes ProDisc L (Lumbar) in low back in '07 and ProDisc C (Cervical) in 2009) was only two weeks away. The 5mg of methadone controlled my pain so well I was almost tempted to cancel my neck surgery but didn't. When I was discharged I was taking 10mg every 6 hours for the first few days and then I went back down to my 5mg after. The same dosage was the same for my neck implant. Being on methadone has made my life so much easier and " normal " , my dosage is 5mg three (3) times a day plus flexaril (10mg.) only at night to help with some spasms and to help me sleep. Methadone has been my savior, NO druggie feeling. NO medicine head. NO withdrawal symptoms if I miss a med. It could be because I am taking the lowest dosage possible or it could be that the methadone is simply doing what it's supposed to do. I always have to remind people that, Yes Methadone is used in drug rehabs BUT its primary function is for chronic pain management. Just my opinion of course but after 18 years of dealing with back and neck pain, and having tried almost every narcotic and opiate pain out there in those 18 years, Methadone has been the only medication that has controlled my pain while also allowing me to live " normally " (whatever that is anymore). Guest guest
I have been taking Methadone for several years and get good pain relief from it. There is no " high " and I can still function. The major issue is constipation, but eating a healthy diet of fresh fruit and veggies along with taking Colace helps resolve this. I have also found that I need to make sure I drink at least 2 quarts of liquids each day. Hope this helps. Guest guest
I've been taking Methadone for 6 years now and I really like it. I don't get " high. " I can drive, do my water aerobic classes, hang out with my friends. Most of my family and my close friends know what I take, I'm not ashamed of it. Truly this med has given me my " life " back.
