My back muscles spasm when they come, will put me down flat for four days until the pain lets up and I can get up and around. It is so hard to be so careful as to not bring one of those spasms on. It`s like getting a big electrical shock. As crazy as this sounds taking a ride on my motorcycle helps. Maybe it`s the vibrations the engine gives off.The worst part is getting on and off. Larry Most of the time back pain comes from inflammation and I have had a MRI on my SI joints and they were bright white and the Doctor (whom I used to work for) told me I needed to get home and on a anti inflammation medication. Muscle spasm either cause or are result of inflammation. The rhythmic ride of a Harley (don't know what brand you have ) may distract you or cause numbness or muscle spasm. I usually get it from overexerting what is " my pace " as Jennette states. My pace may not be anybody else's but I have to take care of myself. I get rock hard spasm but with muscle spasm they cause lactic acid which causes burrs in your muscle and my myofascial physical therapist, massages these out. They are knots in my muscles. You can go to You Tube and type in myofascial exercises for back and they will show you many. Most Doctors give anti inflammatories, opioids, and muscle relaxants and physical therapy to deal with muscle spasm as opioids only do not usually deal with spasms effectively, only pain. I take tiizidine, a short term muscle relaxant so I am not sedated much, Ectoledec is the anti inflammatory I take, my opioid, and Neurotin for nerve pain. I do not take my muscle relaxant unless I need it. I used to use Volatran Gel but the manufacturer is not making it anymore but some doctors give a compounded cream that has anti inflammatories in it but I use Tiger Balm and heat wraps by Therma Care. If you have never used a TENS unit (electotherapy) they have advanced and you with your motorcycle shocks, it might be effective for you. I use my home physical therapy program program and if I did not do my stretches to include knee to chest holds, I would be in spasm more. My previous Doctor and my physical therapist stated they have never met anyone in such severe, deep, muscle spasm and like the commercials, you could bounce a .......... off my buttocks, Sacral Illac spasms. Most back pain syndromes are due to inflammation, especially in the acute phase, which typically lasts for two weeks to three months. Myofascial Release for the Back - YouTube www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dJQj_po-fY I would have never , never, known these things unless I went to a myofascial therapist who did an assessment on me and has helping me to keep my spasm down and deal with the issues I have with recommending home exercises and stretches. I wear a sacral ilac belt to keep my Sacral Iliac Joint from separating and back posture positions to relax my back. I have never had such bad back spasm until I had my back spasm and the rods made me walk differently and kept my back in a straight position which I do not have strong abdominal muscles so I got bad back spasms trying to adjust to the new position. This supposedly is common. I can relate with you so I felt the need to answer your post also. Many of us experience back spasm but if you could get a physical therapy assessment from a myofascial therapist, I think it would be helpful. Good Luck and let us know how you are. I came from Choctow Country outside of Hugo Oklahoma and now we respectfully kid because the Choctaw Casino there is really bringing in the money and buses in elders from all over Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. My home is Paris Tx twenty miles from there and driving by there and seeing the new construction, hotel, and entertainment center is awesome. My great grandmother was a Choctaw Indian and my Grandmother always showed us her picture and my Great GrandPas. Get Better , Bennie From Cedar Saini Site: Back Spasm A spasm is a spontaneous, abnormal contraction of a muscle. When it occurs in the back near the spinal cord or the nerve roots, it can be very painful. Symptoms The patient feels a sudden pain in the lower back while twisting, pushing or pulling. At first, it may be possible to continue the exercise. But after two to three hours, bleeding in the muscles stretches the torn muscle and tendons. The spasm that results causes severe back pain that gets worse with any movement of the back. The patient usually prefers to lie still, curled up with the knees bent and the spine arched forward. Causes and Risk Factors Spasms happen often when a muscle is swollen and tender (inflamed) or strained. Any great force can tear the muscles and tendons of the lower back. This occurs commonly in sports like weight lifting, football, basketball, baseball or golf that require pushing or pulling or sudden twisting of the back. The risk of back spasm goes up if you have: • A pelvis that tips forward more than normal • Any back weakness such as arthritis, spondylolysis, spondylolisthesis, disk rupture, spinal stenosis, or a tumor • Lordosis • Tight hamstrings, the tendons that run down the back of the legs • Weak or inflexible muscles along the spine • Weak stomach muscles
Guest guest
Bennie, I cannot thank you enough for all the information that you took the time and effort to send to me. I am writing most of it down that is new information to me. I am sorry that you have so many pain issues also. I wish I could wave a magic wand and help everyone in this group but it doesn't work that way. Each one of us has our own world of pain and health problems and ways to survive as best we can. I am leaning on opioids to much and beginning to get shaky hands at need times. You are right Bennie it is a Harley (low rider)I'm not the biggest guy in the world and the low rider is perfect size for me. The way I see it it`s now or never for me with the bike and it sure helps mentally and eases the pain. I have the keys hidden when the opioids are working because that's when I want to ride the most. Thank`s again for all the new information, Larry

Larry, In Dr. Tennant's Guide, he discusses enhancers that can assist your opioids if you are not taking NSAIDS. Excederin has caffeine which gives an up and sometimes you need that as I know I do. Now shaky hands can come from other things so take you medication maybe 15 minutes earlier to prevent the tremors if they cause you body to stress. zanax and sleep meds can cause that tremor but having had the Vitamin D deficiency that gave me the tremors , I just shake, shake, shake. Neurotin causes me to shake sometimes and Lupron does also. The med site has these listed so I just deal with them unless they stay and increase. Oh I agree the magic wand would be great. My husband has a GoldWing and I love him to death and I told him, " When you've been on the best, I just can't do the rest " . I was early twenties, blonde Farrah Facett hair down my back with leather pants laced and long boots (not to burn my legs), I did not ride with helmet (shame shame) and my Mother would pull me over and state to get one on. The orthopedic I worked with in surgery would tell me how many times he saw me without my helmet so I gave in. Then I started college at night but our 1954 pan head with suicide clutch, we paid three thousand dollars to Crump Brothers paint in Dallas that paints race cars and it was pearl burgundy and silver ribbons. Great colors. Bad first husband, didn't deserve the care I gave him and motorcycles I paid for. Bad guy. I am glad I got out of that relationship as I would have never had stress released Bennie American Pain Foundation has publications and the Target Pain Journal has areas to write things down and keep in one place. I put my pages in a three ring notebook and it proved to be helpful with my social security disability. Good Luck Larry, Bennie
