Following the surgery, did your doctor explain to you in what way the remaining thyroid would function? Dear , Yes, the surgeon did tell me how the remaining thyroid would work. The parathyroids which are near the glands are what produce what is needed to avoid synthroid the drug those take who have the whole thyroid removed. The remaining gland does the remaining work. I didn't have to go on any medication prior to the surgery and the only thing that bothered me was that the benign tumor had to grow it was about the size of a thumb before it had to be removed through surgery. I wish it could have been zapped like I have heard other tumors are and blown apart but the surgeon said it wasn't feasible given the tumor was so attached to the gland. I am sure if there had been a problem with the function of my thyroid prior to the surgery I would have been put on medication. Thanks for the wishes for less pain. I hope you have less pain too. Take care, Christy
