Guest guest
Lyndi and all While most medications should not be flushed, they still recommend flushing CIIs (opioid pain medications and stimulants) because of the high abuse liability. Flushed narcotics are not dangerous, opioids are naturally in the ecosystem. The biggest threat as far as flushed medications are hormones. Steve M in PA I was just reading through the following link for Opana ER. http://www.opana.com/patients/about-opana.aspx Under the section " How should I take Opana ER " it says to flush unused medication down the toilet! I do believe I'll be contacting the company. Medications should never be flushed down the toilet. It gets into the water supply, along with all the other medications that people foolishly flush down the toilet. Better to smash it all up and mix it in with coffee grounds or used > kitty litter etc. Or, take it to your pharmacist for disposal. > > Just don't put it into the water supply! Guest guest
Our pharmacy has a collection area we can take unused meds to and they discard them.

I recommend taking them back to the pharmacy for safe disposal. But if you don't want to do that, the best recommendation I ever saw was to crush them up and mix them into used cat litter. That takes care of the abuse issue entirely! Cheryl in AZ Moderator
Guest guest
For my Mom's meds that were " addictive " we were told to mix them with coffee grounds or cat litter add some water and put it in the trash. Her meds were actually destroyed this way by the Medical Examiner for the county she lived in. And really he would know how to do this without effecting the environment negatively. Just a thought. Guest guest
Most pharmacies won't take them back to dispose of, and the little bags you can buy at the pharmacy to send unused meds back in specifically say NOT to send controlled substances back in them. So even the pharmacists here say to dispose of them in wet cat litter or coffee grounds. Or sometimes you can take them to the sheriff's department when they have a huge drug turn in thing so that they can dispose of them properly.
