Guest guest
In my house, this went away with antivirals/antifungals. I remember those days... But I can't remember if it was the antiviral or the antifungal that did it. I want to say that it was the antifungals but I'm not positive. Cheryl~http://www.gryffins-tail.blogspot.com~@midian42~ Hi. I am new to this board and am learning more than any other message board I have ever participated in. I was hoping that I could get some help with our most recent issue. My daughter is 5y/o and we have been doing biomedical for the last 2 years. Over the last 6 months she started hitting herself in the head when becoming frustrated. It has become increasingly worse. It is when she is frustrated or angry. At school it occurs when any type of unpreferred activity is presented. If you hold her hand down she will try to head butt the teacher etc......Occasionally, it will occur out of nowhere but most of the time it is from anger/frustration etc. It has been suggested to me that it may be a headache caused by yeast, food or supps. Kind of vague, huh??? She is gf/cf/sf/sugar free and yeast free. School is suggesting a helmet and I want no part of it. If anyone out there has any suggestions for me it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time. Kara's Mom
Guest guest
if it's happening around fustration then you need to figure out what the common trigger is, work to hard, she doesn't understand what is expected, to distracting to work in current environment, ect then work from there, you can take the level down, have written instructions on what is expected, take her from the room to a less distracting enviornment (quiet library) is this happening at certain times of the day? after lunch or snack? if so it could be a food allergy or soy sneaking in where you may not know ect. is it following hands on craft times, using playdough, oil based paints, markers ect. it can be contact with an allergen through hands touching art supplies. you can ask the school for a functional and behavoiral assesment where they log her for days via several different people looking at this factors and help them come up with a behavioral plan..... Guest guest
Hi , My 4 yr old son has been known to do the same thing when frustrated/angry/anxious. He also bites his hand. The head banging has been greatly decreased when I give him olive leaf extract 500 mg 2xday and turmeric 500 mg 2 x day. I am considering raising both to 3x day to see if completely eliminates it. More info on the wonderful benefits of olive leaf extract can be found at http://www.herbwisdom.com/herb-olive-leaf.html I buy Natural Factors Olive Leaf extract and bulk organic non-irradiated turmeric at the health food store. I also support his liver with Milk Thistle. Hope this helps. Stan's Mom Hi. I am new to this board and am learning more than any other message board I have ever participated in. Guest guest
, (some ideas take it for what it's worth!) I agree w/Cheryl..and I had these experiences too... Milk/Wheat caused this in our house. My son would wake up and bang his head repeatedly, and when he was frustrated would head butt everything in his way..(it was awful! I know what you are going thru) -- I actually thought (he was only 2.5 at the time) a helmet would be a good thing...but at 5 -- um, no, that's not really an option. I know you said you are GF/CF -- are you also soy (as soy can cause this type of reaction too.) -- I found that the soy proteins did this (to my child), not the oil. (other people have had different experiences w/this) -- the other thing, if you haven't gotten an IGg test done, it might be worthwhile, to make sure you got all the culprits. I had made the mistake ONCE of not reading a label, and giving him a smoothie that had wheat and barley grass in it, they are considered to be " gluten " free. (Has to do with the maturity of the seed?) However, it was a disaster, and I learned quickly that he can't have these either. I know this might sound silly..but when my son's blood sugar was low, he was very irritable and didn't cope well (which is putting it mildly). I know you said " sugar " free. -- Do you mean all sugar, including fruit? -- the reason I ask, is that sugar yes, feeds yeast, but it also the preferred food for the brain. I found that when I limited (too much) my natural sugars, he was a train wreck. Although, I do combat yeast, he has made great strides in so many areas. (He only has a slight speech delay now) Judy Converse's book " special needs kids eat right. " - was a great resource to me as it explained how to make sure your child was getting enough without exacerbating the other problems (like yeast/fungi, etc.). There is another post too that suggested too much B6 also caused aggressive behavior -- I had mine removed from my son's compounded multi- and it took care of nightmares he was having as well has the aggressive issues. I hope this gives you a place to begin... laura > > > Hi. I am new to this board and am learning more than any other message board I have ever participated in. Guest guest
Ooooh, yes! I remember low blood sugar being the cause of some serious angst in my house at 2-4 yrs old! It's still a problem, just doesn't show up as frustration anymore. Head banging always stemmed from anger, frustration or trying to make himself cry so he could try to guilt trip me! At 2 he had a perpetual bruise in the middle of his forehead. I was soooooo glad when the head banging stopped! Guest guest
I see that when his yeasts gets bad, or when he is around Lysol cleaners or the like. It goes away with a strict GFCFSF plus antifungals and a chemical free environment. Which I NEVER was able to do when he was in school no matter how specific and great my instructions were, they never stuck to a GFCFSF or dye-free, phenol free place with cleaners like Lysol etc... most of his problems went away when I took him out and home schooled him. I know it won't be forever but just during this time when him treatments are really complicated. It's not for everyone, but it does leave me a lot of time to really heal him without the constant battles of the schools and teachers and diets and doctor's notes. My life is actually less stressed and he is getting better. it makes chelation easier too. He goes to social skills classes, I take him on field trips and use home school stuff from the internet. good luck. I hope the banging goes away. hugs, W. > > > Hi. Guest guest
I've come across this with some of my students. Although it doesn't help anything biomedically, I sign (ASL) " no " and imitate the hand to head motion. I say verbally " no hitting your head " and give another option. Eg. Tell them instead they can say, " I'm sad. I wanted the cookies. " This can be spoken, signed, written, or you can write it and read it to them, like you are giving them a voice. Always use a calm but confident, in charge voice. It is good to convey empathy, but make sure " no " sounds like " no. " Give an explanation or a solution. Eg. " I know you are upset, but I don't want you to do that because I dont want you to hurt yourself. You can not have a cookie, but when you get your work done, you can go outside. " And then clarify, " No hitting your head. " You would be amazed at how just making expectations clear can stop a worrisome behavior. I so wish I knew that when my son was little and had an obsession with writing on the walls in crayon. By the way, I find sign language and simple written directions extremely helpful in making receptive language clearer for my students. You can go to You Tube to learn basic signs. Sign language is really helpful when I don't want to engage in a verbal arguement with my high functioning kids too. And please no one take this the wrong way, but I learned a lot of classroom management strategies from the " Dog Whisperer " on the National Geographic commercial. The man just commands attention with his energy and his body language. This saved me when my kids were chaotic and running the show with their more difficult behaviors. Jen Jen > > Hi. Guest guest
my son does this. it comes and goes. i have read that self injurious behvaiors can be caused by clostridia. u may weant to look into that. the helmet really can help. u may want to at least have one on hand. i leave it at school for ther really bad days. it became a comfort thing for him To: mb12 valtrex Sent: Wed, March 10, 2010 7:41:44 AMSubject: Re: Help w/Head Hitting I've come across this with some of my students. Guest guest
To Everyone: Thank you so much for all of your responses. I have been on several message boards over the past 2 years and never have I had this many responses to a post. I really, really appreciate all of you that have sent your suggestions my way. You gave me alot to go on. For the one post, yes we are also soy free. Sugar free too, but not to the extreme. She does get some. Kara's diet is very limited. She eats pretty much the same thing everyday. Unlike many of the other kids I have read about, the diet did not expand her likings at all. She still wants no parts of veggies and does not eat red meat. I have tried elimination type diets targeting one food, taking it away a few weeks then adding back in. Things like eggs, bananas and chicken. Just to see if they were possibly affecting her. I sometimes wonder about corn, I do let her have Fritos, which is corn, oil and salt. I have eliminated those as well with no change in behavior. Thanks again to all, your support is very much appreciated. I am glad I found this board, what a great means of support!!!! Guest guest
I know this sounds crazy, but my son, same thing -- would not eat red meat or veggies to save his life. (I'm laughing, because I was told I didn't offer it, and therefore he didn't eat it, which is FAR FAR from what I was doing.) Once I added a zinc supplement -- all that changed. (it took about 3 weeks to see a difference) And I use Celtic salt on his veggies (it's balanced, it's not like reg table salt, although, I do use table salt sometimes because the iodine is actually good for these guys) I do give him salami (very salty, loves it), pepperoni, hamburger (w/salt) and I throw in noodles and veggies. My son over the past two months went from no veggies to 8 different ones now. Funny thing, he eats a lot of egg whites (which is a complete protein) w/salt and pepper cooked in coconut oil. He loves this. I mean LOVES this. So I don't worry too too much about the protein. I also juice for him. (I add a veg here and there) also, extremely helpful. I know ALL about trying to get new things into your child.. The zinc though, I had it compounded. If you want the spec sheet, I will be more than happy to provide it to you so you can give it to your doc. It's not that expensive. I want to say around $20 for a little over a months supply. Before the diet he ate pasta, yogurt, milk, toast w/strawberry jam only, and strawberries and bananas. Once I instituted the diet, he still only ate the replacement items -- up until I added zinc. It was like a light went off... ~laura > > > > > Hi. I am new to this board and am learning more than any other message board I have ever participated in. Guest guest
you can get zinc in any health food store....you can also do a zinc test on a kid, add it to something they already like (open the cap and sprinkle it inside the food) if they don't taste it they are low in it. and it will shut down taste buds. so then things like veggies would be tasteless slime. Guest guest
Self-injury can escalate and become quite serious so I encourage you to partner closely with your doctor to help ease her frustration. When it comes out of nowhere……. that sounds like Seizure Activity. My son would have these tantrums, rages and meltdowns that were organic in nature. Turns out they were Seizures. Guest guest
Hi. Thanks for the advice about the fritos. If you don't mind me asking, how are you so sure that they are not gfcf?? Not that I doubt what you are saying, just curious. I called the company awhile back and other than the possibility of cross contamination due to the assembly line, they assured me that corn, oil and salt were the only ingredients. I guess possibly the corn could be contaminated???? While we are on the subject, do you or anyone have any suggestions of a chip type snack that I could replace for the fritos?? Thanks for your input. . Guest guest
Corn can be problematic with kids are on the spectrum (even if they've been cleared for corn by a food sensitivity screen.)Perhaps, a butternut squash type "chip?" We do Butternut Squash buttons, instead of chips. Have a great day...... Kara's Mom Re: Help w/Head Hitting , (some ideas take it for what it's worth!) I agree w/Cheryl..and I had these experiences too... Milk/Wheat caused this in our house. Guest guest
does this test work with the other minerals too? or just zinc? Re: Re: Help w/Head Hitting you can get zinc in any health food store....you can also do a zinc test on a kid, add it to something they already like (open the cap and sprinkle it inside the food) if they don't taste it they are low in it. and it will shut down taste buds. so then things like veggies would be tasteless slime. Guest guest
no just zinc. it effects your bodies ability to taste when it's low....so that is WHY it works Re: Help w/Head Hitting I know this sounds crazy, but my son, same thing -- would not eat red meat or veggies to save his life. Guest guest
We use Kirkmans Zinc Capsules. I opened one up and sprinkled it on her toast before putting the earth balance on, not the least bit suspicious. She ate it just like always. So safe to assume her zinc must be low if she didn't taste it?? Hoping I didn't disguise the taste too much by putting the earth balance on top. Just checking. Thanks.
