Guest guest
Hey Neil, Congrats! Glad to see you back! I don't know about the hernia feeling, however I can describe appendicitis. First of all, if you've had this pain for quite some time, most likely it is not the appentics as usually if it's that, it needs to be taken out pretty quickly, however there are times some Dr's will try an antibiotic unless they feel it's an emergency situation. When I had my " attacks " from my appendix, I first started with nausea, vomiting, then had a dull ache in my right lower quadrant. I thought it was a bug, but the pain got so intense I finally went to the Dr. He " tested " my area from having me lie flat on my back, and he pushed on all areas of my body. Once he pushed the sight of the appendix, I almost went through the roof it hurt so bad! After one hour, I was on my way to surgery. Appendix is a common procedure done daily, and at the time mine came out, they didn't offer Laproscopic, now they do (depending on Dr). Don't diagnose yourself, get to a Dr. if you're questioning anything like that. The appendix does nothing for the body, but if it lets go, you could be in serious trouble. Good luck! Dawn I'm Back with a Hernia Question... Hey everyone, it's me, Neil... After several months I have managed to mostly be back on track with my eating and so forth. As of this week, a little over 6 months out, I have lost 190 pounds and am feeling very good. I just got back all my test results and almost everything looks fine. Dr. Randall gave me a B12 booster and had me pick up a B12 supplement because I have been experiencing some numbness in the skin of my legs and what's left of my belly, plus I got lectured for not exercising, but otherwise he said everything else was fine. My cholesterol numbers were amazing. My Triglycerides, which were 480 before the surgery have dropped to 156 and my LDL, which was unreadable because of the Tri levels is also down to 156. By HDL hasn't changed from 28 because I am not exercising, but I intend to fix that. There's a gym across the street, so I have to stop making excuses. I am eating very well now, though I still have some trouble with overeating a bit, but at least I have found many things which go down easy and which I can space out more appropriately. I took advantage of my new-found energy to update my home page after 2 years of stagnation, which includes a page on the surgery and a spreadsheet of my weight loss for each week since then. I think you'll find it interesting. You can see it at http://world.std.com/~drwho. There aren't many recent pictures of me, not since August, as I hate to burn a roll of film just for one photo. I'm trying to find someone with a digital camera who can take a few snaps of me so I can update the page. Anyway, other than to update you and give you my web page, I am writing to ask those of you who have experienced a post-surgery hernia AND/OR appendicitis if you could relate to me what the pain is like. For the last few years I have experienced mild pain off and on in the lower right of my belly which I have always attributed to the strain on my abdominal muscles from my size. Over the last few days, however, the pain has increased a bit and yesterday it was pretty intense at times, mostly while sitting upright at the computer or when getting up from sitting down. I read up on both hernias and appendicitis, though, and the descriptions of both in the Mayo Clinic Guide didn't really match what I was having, at least not the symptoms. Has anyone experienced *both* of these pains and can you explain the difference? After I got up this morning the pain had lessened quite a bit and now feels more like the after-effect of a muscular cramp. If the pain had been intense enough, I would certainly have gone to the hospital, but it was never *that* bad. It also felt too close to the surface to be something internal like appendicitis. It didn't even feel as deep as it does when I have intestinal cramps. Am I likely to have symptoms of the hernia at 6 months? Granted I *did* lose a lot of weight quickly, because I started out so big... Anyway, any input would be appreciated.
