I had experimented with 4000 units a day for a while, and considered having tests done for D levels. By what I read, I just decided to go down to from 1000 to 1200 units a day along with animal A and omega 3(cod liver oil). Did some research tonight, and you may want to read some. These people had low levels, but those getting the high doses, these ended up with more falls and fractures. Seems these were annual high doses though. Lyndi wrote I've been falling for years, but it wasn't until this year that my lower leg snapped like a frickin' twig. I'd been on a doctor ordered large dose of calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D. My endocrinologist has me on 50,000 units (Yes, fifty thousand) three days/week. The higher doses may be due to malabsorption from the three gastrointestinal surgeries that I had. From what I understand, iron is absorbed in the duodenum. I had mine removed due to a small tumor near the pancreas. When I fractured my wrist last October, the orthopedic surgeon had a difficult time reducing the fracture due to osteoporosis, and the bones being soft. The bone was soft for my age, and the screws used to reduce the fracture had little to " grab " onto. The presence of osteoporosis was not known until the x-ray for the fracture were taken. Previous bone density scans were within normal limits. Is 150,000 units of vitamin D per week normal? Do high levels of Vitamin D impact balance leading to more falls and potential fractures? Hope everyone is having a pain-tolerable day. Tom S.
