Hi everyone! , you are so right about being a patient yourself

making you a better nurse. I am fortunate enough to be able to

continue working part-time as a nurse in an emergency department.

After being ill myself, I never forget to leave the call light tied

sturdily within reach, provide blankets for patient & family, make

sure pain relief is obtained after giving drugs, nag doctor's for

more pain meds if needed, etc.

My husband has also had several serious medical problems;

between the 2 of us, we've had almost every medical treatment in

the book! One shift I explained to one patient about spinal taps,

to another about endoscopies,to another about back surgery - all in

the same 8-hour period. That day I realized how fortunate I was to

be able to tell someone else about procedures, not just from a

medical viewpoint, but also from a patient's viewpoint. Although I

never would have wished for an illness like pancreatitis, it DOES

help to see some good come from it.
