Guest guest
We use Bayer Ketostix. I don't know if they are more accurate or not, but they are the ones that measure ketones by numbers..... 5 (trace), 15 (small), 40 (moderate), 80 & 160 (large).... which is what most of us are familiar with. I'm sure it corresponds roughly to your sticks but yes, it does give more levels. The stick turns color and then you compare it to a chart that comes with the sticks. I'm not sure if it matters if the urine is fresh or not... I suppose that's ideal. I've always had to use the cotton ball in the diaper method because Katera is farrrrrrr from being potty trained. I don't have control over when she goes. I will say that I usually don't check the first morning diaper but I don't think I was ever told not to. You could kind of experiment and see if there is a big difference between that and the other diapers throughout the day.... if so, it's probably an inaccurate reading. The only think I do remember being told was not to try just smushing the stick against inside of the wet disposable diaper because there are proteins in the absorbant gel inside it that would alter the reading. Patti Ketosticks We live in Mexico and the only ketosticks that we find are from Roche laboratories, called Keto-Diabur test 5000 . It only gives 3 different levels with 1, 2 or 3 +++. Is there some better test ? More precise ?We are going to NY in 2 weeks and could buy some there . Please advise us as to which ones are the best .Also , what happens if you check with some urine that has been in a diaper all night ? Does it alter the result ? Thanks you very much for your answers.Orane
Guest guest
I don't know if you can get things shipped from here via the Internet, but I just found a great deal at drugstore.com. They have URS strips, which are about half the price of other strips. With your first order, if you buy $10 or more, you get free shipping. They have the same color code as the Bayer strips. > We live in Mexico and the only ketosticks that we find are from Roche > laboratories, called Keto-Diabur test 5000 . Guest guest
Bayer Ketostix seems to be the most accurate. I tried two cheaper brands and could barely get a reading on the cheaper brands. So, I would go with a more expensive one to get the accurate reading. I live in NY and I get them through my local pharmacy but have also gotten them at WalMart so know they are available fairly easily. Guest guest
I use the keto-sticks as well. I think they are quite good - not sure if there is a more accurate brand out there but these work for us. Jenn Patti wrote: We use Bayer Ketostix. Guest guest
Orane, I was told when we started the diet nearly 2 years agao that we should measure ketones twice a day, at the times when the levels are at their peaks. The dietitian at the time said that the body peaks naturally twice a day at about 9am and again at about 3pm. Now, I dont know how true that is, because we are not as experienced here in Australia as in the US, but in my experience the theory seems to hold. I expect that overnight nappies would contain urine which has varying ketone levels, depending on the timing of feeds and meds, and on the individual's metabolism, so testing the overnight nappy may not be the most accurate reading for the day, but may be an indicator for the rest of the day. Personally I wouldnt put too much value on it. I would think that testing fresh urine was more accurate, and putting a cottonwool ball into the nappy seems the easiest way of collecting it. Hope this helps (Hannah's mum, Australia) Ketosticks We live in Mexico and the only ketosticks that we find are from Roche laboratories, called Keto-Diabur test 5000 . Guest guest
I tried my URS strips today in comparison to the more expensive ones, and they both registered the same. However, the URS strip container has LOUSY colors to compare to, so if you buy the URS, you may also want to buy one container of a better brand and keep the container. > We live in Mexico and the only ketosticks that we find are from Roche > laboratories, called Keto-Diabur test 5000 .
