Hi everyone,

Just got off the phone with my Dad.He wanted me to ask the group a

question. He believes that hypoparathyriod or any thyroid diease correlates

with CMT.Why? Some of the symptoms are the same.(personally I don'y feel

these two go hand in hand. But since I don't know everything thought I would

ask.)My Dad had thyroid cancer 10 years ago and had thyroid and parathyroid

removed. So, he has a lot of involuntary muscle spasms and with CMT he has a

lot of voluntary muscle spasms.Since the thyroid controls calcium in the

system and taking calcuim for both these spasms helps; He's under the

immpression they " go " together.SO,let me know if you know anything about

this. June

Lamar here,

The thyroid produces thyroxin that is a main controller of metabolism rate.

The parathyroids control several things one being calcium metabolism. A lack of

parathyroid hormones can produce spasms and cramps. BUT it is an entirely

different process than those caused by CMT. many things can cause similar

symptoms. A stroke and a back injury can produce paralysis. The heart,

indigestion, hiatus hernias, and anxiety can all produce chest pain. The

problems with parathyroid deficiency are due to a lack of hormones, the trouble

from CMT is due to nerve damage. I know of no correlation other than some

similarity of symptoms. In everything I have read out hormones remain normal

unless other things change them.

Convincing him of this may be another matter.
