I used to be the same way, I would try to fight taking them as long as I could, my doctor finally told me that I was only hurting myself by doing this. The longer you put off taking them the harder it will be to manage your pain. The best way that I have found is to take pain meds as soon as I begin hurting, I end up taking fewer of them and for a shorter period of time that way. The longer I waited the more I had to take to manage my pain. I think your doctor will understand, if not you can explain it to him next time you see him. Hang in there!!! Hope you feel better soon!! I hope you are feeling somewhat better. I think its really hard for a " significant other " to understand that there are some diseases that cannot be " fixed " . They see you suffer & feel helpless. They need to believe someone somewhere can help. I've been married for 36 years to a great guy who usually is very understanding, but he still cannot understand that, for now, I cannot keep chasing from doctor to doctor. I have been to my local doc as well as specialists in Miami, Boston, & New York. No one can find a reason for the pancreatitis except for my pancreas divisum. We've tried ERCP's with sphincterotomies, stents. I've tried all kinds of medicines. I've tried accupuncture, moxibustion, TENS units, yoga, & I-can't-remember-what-else with no improvement. Like my husband, your boyfriend may just not be ready to accept that right now, nothing more can be done except pain control. He may feel that you should keep looking & somewhere you will find some one with the magic silver bullet to make you well again. > What I didn't tell her when I spoke to her was that I was > really hurting again but that I was out of pain meds again. Please let your doctor know how much pain you are having. If you don't tell him, he can't know. Please be assertive & help your doctor help you with the pain. Its one thing to have to accept the disease, but you do not have to let the pain go untreated. You know how bad the pain is. You should not also have the burden of caring how others will receive your voicing your needs. This is sounding so preachy & I didn't mean to. I hope you are feeling better. jang

Guest guest
Thanks for everyone's kind words and support! I finally broke down and called the doctor this a.m. to see if any of the other doctors there would prescribe me something. She warned me that they might not since, though, since they don't like to prescribe narcotics to patients they haven't seen. I understand that but my whole file complete with 3 ERCP results and 6 CT scans is at their office. Surely a doctor can decide on a prescription from that alone??? And I'm only talking about hydrocodone 500s. I didn't think that they were even that strong. Now my boyfriend is mad because he thinks I should change doctors if they won't prescribe something. I don't mind him being mad - he just always sounds like he's mad at ME! Ugh! Plus, I'm tired of changing doctors. I like the one I have. It has just been unfortunate that the couple of times I've needed something (Thanksgiving and now Alabama school's spring break time), he has been on vacation... Oh well. I didn't mean to vent again. LOL! BTW, I do feel a bit better today. Hope everyone else is feeling better, too!
