Guest guest
Hi, I joined this list hoping to find some discussion of these same issues. The main list -- the real one, that is -- is overloaded with new people asking the same questions over and over again. Background: I had a proximal lap rny 7-14-98 at a bmi of 47. Excellent healing, no complications. In 8 months I had lost about 70 lbs -- ironically, the same weight I had lost in Weight Watchers during the same amount of time. Since then, due to a number of factors, I've regained between 10 and 15 lbs, and I am having a hard time losing it. I joined ossg hungry months ago, and then ossg 7 secrets, trying to get a grip on this. I see an eating disorder therapist, I've joined a gym, I started doing strength training at home (dumbbells). I bought a bike (and then fell off it!) and read Geneen Roth. I've seen a gastroenterologist and had an upper GI, to see if anything has gone awry with my surgery. Everything is intact, and I can feel that the pouch is still small. I even get stuck sometimes with certain kinds of protein. I try to stay away from carbs -- I don't like bread or pasta much anymore -- and favor protein and vegetables. But the bottom line is that since a couple of months after surgery I've been able to eat more than my friends who have had surgery, and I have an appetite. I also developed a sweet tooth after surgery -- go figure! -- and don't " dump " in any recognizable or behavior-changing way. I try to avoid grazing, and sweets. But I still tend to take in more calories than I am burning up. Which means i don't lose weight. And it's somewhat of a struggle to keep from re-gaining more. Or at least, it would be easy to eat more and gain the weight back. Just like when I regained weight after being on Weight Watchers. All it takes is a couple hundred calories extra a day. I look a lot better than I did before surgery, and feel great -- but I'm a lot bigger than I want to be. So I would be interested in a list that addresses these issues -- except that there already have been lists for that, and they have not come to much. The 007Secrets program itself is very interesting -- but did not generate much thoughtful discussion. And ossghungry has been inactive for weeks. I'd like to hear other people's opinions. Guest guest
Hi Peggy (and others), I snipped the previous post on this topic to save the bandwidth. Thank you for giving us the details of your progress. I'm at a different place than you, but I live in constant fear of weight gain or slipping into bad habits. It's making me a bit crazy. I agree that the main list is overrun in the service of pre-ops and newbies. I found that I could only stand it for about 4 weeks prior to my surgery. I'm glad this grads list is here, but I don't really qualify for all the criteria (since it serves 1 year or more post-ops). I had my Open RNY on 2/4/99. I've now lost 105 lbs (from 280 to 175). I'm 36 years of age, 5'10 " and my original goal was 170. I'm now reevaluating that (I've gone from a size 26 to a size 12, which I haven't been since early high school, I could still lose a bit more weight and build more muscle I suspect my new goal will be 160). I've lost a lot of hair, but no one seems to notice but me. My doctor said it will stop soon and the real concern would be if I stopped menstruating, which is not the case. I exercise regularly, but less than I did a couple of months ago, so I worry about that back-sliding and what it might mean to my continued weight loss and maintenance. I'm really worried about gaining weight back or damaging my pouch somehow. I often feel full after eating and have some minimal dumping syndrome from sugars and regular food, but this decreases each week (much to my concern and dismay). As a result of this moment-by-moment fear, I've decided to up my protein intake and start reducing my increasing carbo and sugar snacking (as suggested by some on this list). I bought some low-sugar protein bars to test the process and see if increasing my protein helps me cut down on the carbo and sugar snacking in the afternoon and evening. I've also decided to give myself a guideline for my exercising. I can blow-off my former daily morning workout (that I started blowing-off about 4 weeks ago) as long as I do it twice/week and do my noon run/walk at each lunch (usually 5x/week, sometimes only 4x) and one gym visit over the weekend. That puts me at a minimum of 8 hours/wk of structured exercise. Since I was doing about 10-12 hours a couple of months ago, it seems like a scary but reasonable adjustment I may be able to maintain. I still feel like I'm procrastinating on those morning workouts though (that's my taped cardio and weight lifting, which is critical to help build a bit of muscle to take up some skin slack). Mostly I just wish I could relax about my loss/maintenance AND be able to stay conscious enough to keep the weight off and the workouts going. The paranoia is very distracting and upsetting. I feel like no one (except the folks on this list) can relate to that. My thin and unobsessive pals just don't understand why I'm so concerned ( " You're doing GREAT! " ) They've never done the yo-yo struggle like we have. -hil --------------------------- Hillary M. Russak Technical Writer Stanford Linear Accelerator Center hrussak@... I spoke with my Dr today and she said that it basically the same now as before surgery, a lot of work/ I would like to find a way to get more help in this area. I am re reading Living a lighter lifestyle- A Guide to Successful Weight Loss and Maintenance Following Gastroplasty or Gastric Bypass. This book is wonderful and makes a lot of sense as does Seven Secrets. I guess all I am saying here is that you are not alone. Guest guest
Angi: I'm under extra stress now, too. I'm in the tax biz and we're in the last crunch of the year. I crave sugar. I started taking chromium picolinate and that helped a bit, and so does walking. I usually walk for 45 minutes or so, but sometimes 30 has to do. (Does anyone know the official stuff about this...how much it takes to get aerobic?) Anyway, I nibble bites of sugar and customers actually bring it to our office. Yesterday, I had enough tablespoon size bites of an apple fritter to eat a whole one. Same with a cookie...it may take all afternoon, but it's still a cookie no matter how many little bites it takes to eat. It's not affecting my weight because I eat so much less overall. When I do choose my food, I choose good high protein stuff. But the sugar drives me crazy. I'm just damn lucky it ain't cocaine or crack or I'd be down the tubes. Guest guest
, I am fighting craving of all kind this week. I have not had this much trouble fighting wanting to overeat since my surgery ( 3-11-98). It really puts a terror in my heart that I am going to gain my weight back. I am going to get off my butt and start exercising every day like my doc said I would have to! I am glad to know I am not the only one... Guest guest
Hi : I was lucky enough to suffer dumping for the first few months. Now, after one year, I con tolerate more sugars. I am a Realtor and in the Orlando area Tuesday is staff meeting day and the donuts, cookies, breads, bagels, you name it, are out all day. Not to mention chocolates! I notice that if I start nibbling I just nibble here and there and like you say, it all adds up. So I made a conscious decision that I would still treat sweets as if I dump and thereby stay totally away. Guest guest
Angie, I dont want to scare you but when I was on the OSSG list the subject of gum came up and they really warned us not to chew it. The reason was if you swallow it, it could mean emergency surgery. Evidently the " new " tummy doesnt digest gum and it just plugs it up. I know gum sounds like a good idea .. but check with your surgeon. Hope this helps, Arrianna Down 130 in a year... and happy. IM >going to try going back on gum again
