Guest guest
CEMENT and ANTIBIOTICS To the best of my knowledge most cements by their very nature are strongly antimicrobial therefore inclusion of antibiotic in the cement is unnecessary. Mc Minn and Treacy have a superb record regarding failure due to infection. Failure I believe is less than 1%, only a proportion of which were due to infection. The techniques described in the video are clearly aimed at minimising exposure to microbes in the areas where they engineer the bone, and prior to application of the prosthesuis. Please - do you really think that these surgeons and their teams want to take risks or " gamble " with infection! I doubt that they jump red lights in their cars either! INFECTION AND DENTISTRY DO NOT brush your teeth anymore! Each time we brush our teeth we expose ourselves to our own micro-organisms. If you are not immuno-compromised (weakened immunity) or do not have particular heart problems etc (for which you would be under advisory instructions) your body will eliminate organisms naturally very quickly without risks. Whilst surgery is traumatic, tiring and demanding on your body it doesn't render you more susceptible to infection, except for the rather large suture around your butt area. That area is very carefully monitored and managed post- surgically and easily treated if infection occurs. If the risks were higher we would ALL have been on prophylactic antibiotics before and after surgery. Statistically the likelihood is low, no - its extremely low. Let's all think positively and rely on our bodies to combat what it is designed to combat. If you have factors which pre-dispose you to infection make sure your surgery team knows well in advance. If not stop worrying. Be as healthy as possible and have faith in nature, ie your body's own capabilities. You'll come through with flying colours. Worry is a killer!
