This website has the diagrams of the body's chemical response and how it damages it if not controlled. http://library.thinkquest.org/25500/index2.htm Anxiety can occur from uncontrolled pain. The flight or fight response that the body wants to get out of the situation it is in(in preparation for fight/flight): * Neural system moves into action (sending messages) * Different types of hormones released * Blood flow to kidneys, gastrointestinal and skin decreases * More sugar released into blood because of the increased demand of energy * Free fatty acids released * Heart rate increases * Blood pressure increases * Heart attack risk increases * Cholesterol increases * Breathing becomes rapid and shallow * Body perspires to cool down. FIGHT/FLIGHT If the physical stress-response is not used for either fight or flight, they become residue (left overs), clogging the normal function of our bodies. Detailed description and examples found at Impacts of Stress and Impact of Stress Diagram. I hope this helps a little and you can research it more on the internet but I think we all have had panic moments that could have been called panic attacks. I certainly have been in situations I wanted to be out of and felt no way out although relief did make me look at things logically. Good Luck on this. Guest guest
How long do they typically last? Carolyn Eddy " Sweet Goat Mama "
Guest guest
Mama, anxiety attacks are generally characterized by high level of nervousness for no clear reason. You can have feelings of impending doom, trembling, feeling shakey, dizzy or lightheaded. Feeling that you can not sit still and don't know what to do to stop the feeling. the attacks for usually short. Depending on the person they can be a few minutes to maybe 15 mins. I seems to the person to last alot longer. At a more intense level, it is called panic attacks. The heart rate increases and breathing becomes swallow and rapid. the individual feels like they want to run from danger. People can experience a certain level of anxiety to a lesser extent. Over time, the body can no longer keep up the fight or flight reaction. It begins to interfer with daily functioning. At that point many individuals are diagnoised with anxiety disorder. There are several medications that are used to treat anxiety. Medications like ativan or xanax are rapid onset and short duration (4 hrs). Klonapin is longer acting and onsets in about 30 mins. Some anti-depressants have anti-anxiety effects. anxiety is frequently present in depression. In some cases, the person only describes anxiety symptoms. after a time, the person swings between agitation and depression. It is referred to as agitiated depression. I hope this help answer your question. Carolyn - Grrr, this makes me so angry. Certainly, this disorder exists and can be very dibilitating. But when you obviously don't have any of the symptoms of it, then this doctor is just using it as a way to wash his hands of you rather than doing the hard work to figure out what's really wrong. And I think they jump to this conclusion too fast with women in particular - and not just male doctors either! I've even had a woman doctor suggest that I was just " nervous " and not really sick at all (turns out I had a life-threatening condition.) GRRRRRRR. I had a good friend who was having some very weird symptoms. Her doctor decided she was just a silly emotional woman and sent her to psychological counseling. I kept telling they were nuts themselves and that there had to be something else going on. Turned out she was having hundreds of tiny seizures a day! If she hadn't kept fighting (at my urging) to get a doctor to pay attention to her and take her symptoms seriously, she could have DIED. Can you find another doctor? Because this one obviously isn't interested in treating you. Cheryl in AZ Moderator
