Guest guest
stella, I would imagine the best person to answer those questions is the surgeon. You should talk to him/her about your concerns. I am sure it would help for the surgeon to know ahead of time any problems you have had with past medications and what helps. I did this when I had my carpel tunnel surgery. Your concerns are very understandable and good points. Hope all goes well, Tami > > I will be having surgery, and I am on the fentanyl patch. > Can anyone tell me how the doctor who does the surgery take the patch off for the surgery, and how do they manage the acute pain along with the chronic pain after the procedure. >
Guest guest
Dear Stella; Don't worry about this, hun I've had 2 spinal operations and am pending a 3rd. When I was on the patch they had me wear it in and during the operation they took it off. The anesthesiologist will take your meds into account completely. When you wake up you'll most likely be placed on a morphine pump unless your allergic to morphine then they will use another opiate. Once you get to the day your supposed to change it out they should place a new one on. If your on the normal dosage of patch your supposed to change them every 3 days if I remember rightly. Hope this helps Mist > > I will be having surgery, and I am on the fentanyl patch. > Can anyone tell me how the doctor who does the surgery take the patch off for the surgery, and how do they manage the acute pain along with the chronic pain after the procedure. Guest guest
Dear Stella, I'm sure as part of the pre-op the hospital will get a list of all the drugs you currently take. Regarding the patch, I use fentanyl myself to control a chronic pain issue. Some Anesthetists use Fentanyl in their arsenal of drugs to put patients asleep for surgery. The fact that you are on Fentanyl will likely change what anesthesiologist would normally use. So be sure to let them know all the pain meds you are on, especially the Fentanyl. I doubt they will make you remove the patch unless it is in the area of the surgery. All the best, and hope you have a good outcome to the procedure. in ville
