Guest guest
Welcome to the group, Lori and congrats on setting a TR date! New to the group Hello Everyone ! I am new here, and planning to have a TR on March 26th 2004, (the day my wonderful 2nd husband asked me to marry him back in 1995) That date brought me luck and happiness then, I am hoping it will again this time. I have three children from a previous marriage, their ages are 16, 15, and 13. I am now 37 and hope to be blessed again some day with another child maybe more. It never seemed possiable for me to go to Dr. Levin, all the years I have lived in Chicago, I thought I could not make the trip and take care of my children and home ect.... Well, It just so happens that my DH is getting transfered to ville Indiana in April 2003 !!! That is just a little over an hour from Louisville !!! I thought God must be trying to tell me something now. So.... I am going to give it a try. Hope to get to know all of you very well !! Guest guest
Welcome and I say good for you! Also I am surprised you are female and TWO neuros are being reluctant to dx MS. I'm in awe a positive kind of awe. Reading your story, I'd like to point out to check into other things esp Lyme disease. Not uncommon and mimics ms to a tee - lesions, seizures , the whole deal. Lyme ended up to be my hubby's dx after being told MS (90% sure said the neuro...). Look out for Dudley's posts on this forum he is loaded with info IMHO. Blessings bianca Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry New to the Group Hi, My name is and I was told I have probable MS. My MRI showed lesions consistent with MS, I have had multiple episodes consistent with MS over a 10+ year period, but because of a normal spinal tap and seizures (not considered common) 2 Neuros are reluctant to diagnose it. One calls it possible the other calls it probable MS and they want me to wait and see and take steroids or anti seizure meds even though the partial seizures only occur during flares. Due to the side affects I refused both.  I joined a local MS group but most seemed to be into the drugs and I feel have pressured me into trying to take them. I felt like they were waiting for me to deteriorate and that was unacceptable so I did my own research and stumbled on a link between, diet, exercise, poor vitamin D levels (due to lack of UVB not supplements), and DHA (an Omega 3) and took things into my own hands. I strongly suspected I was deficient on vit D and do not get enough DHA since I live in the midwest and vit D through sunlight is hard to get in the winter, I have been told and did the wrong thing as far as sunscreen and my skin type (very fair), and it's very expensive to get oily fish (high in Omega 3) without contaminants like mercury. So after a lot of reading of boring medical papers I started going to a tanning bed 3-4 times a week starting about 3 weeks ago for 10 minute sessions. I get out if I start turning pink, started on low vit A cod liver oil (mercury, cadmium, pcb, etc free), changed my diet, take a good multi, vit B, folic acid, and swim 3 times a week. The result is I have gotten a talking to by my dr, have been seizure free and all the MS symptoms but tingling in my lower legs (which contines to improve) has gone. My cognative abilities have also improved and I have gotten into web design since that is a job that doesn't require drivng (one leision is on my occipital lobe and causes visual disruptions during episodes) and published my first page for a local business about a week ago. I am interested in what others have done and if I am on the right track here. I don't want to treat this I want it gone,

Guest guest
> Otherwise I'm considered very healthy, have always eaten a very balanced diet, gotten plenty of exercise, kept myself hydrated, avoided junk food, etc. The only thing lacking was natural vit D and Omega 3s. I really believe it's why it's not worse than it is. > Hi and welcome, I believe you are on the right track, and having the attitude of wanting it GONE is a good thing too. I'm sure it's no coincidence that my case is due to Vitamin D deprivation - I lived in Alaska for almost 10 years. Even in the summer, the sun isn't strong enough to get adequate Vit D levels...wish I had known then! I think diet is also a big part of it. I had been vegetarian for a couple years before my attack of optic neuritis, which is a good thing I believe, but my consumption of gluten and beans went way up. So it's no surprise, really, that following the Best Bet Diet and eliminating those foods did so much for getting rid of my symptoms too. In addition to those changes, I also do acupuncture, fasting and cleansing, etc. and have not had another attack since my first in Oct '07. I've also been relatively symptom-free (the exception is when I eat something that I react to, then I get tingling, fatigue, etc). You will find that many here have had the same experiences with the med-happy folks in the MS society. I have avoided my local group for that very reason. Hanging out here with like minds will probably be a lot more productive and encouraging for you! Crystal

To answer your question, all opiates (like hydrocodone, oxycodone, methadone, and morphine sulphate) are extremely safe when taken as prescribed. They do not damage organs like ibuprofen and acetominophen do. Of course, as with any medicine that you take on a daily basis, you will develop a chemical dependency on it, but that is NOT the same as addiction. Addicts abuse drugs in order to get high; a dependency simply means that you won't be able to stop the drug cold-turkey without experiencing physical withdrawal symptoms. But that's true of any drug you take on a daily basis, including anti-depressants, anti-seizure medicines, and a whole list of others. Initial side effects may include some sleepiness, but that goes away as your body adjusts to the drug. All opiates also have the potential to cause constipation, so you need to be proactive on that front. The mirical of the last five years for those of us on daily pain management was the introduction of Miralax. It is a fabulous drug - now available over the counter - that you can take every single day of your life safely for constipation. It is NOT a laxative like the old style that were considered unsafe for daily use. It doesn't give you gas or diahhrea, it just makes everything move properly when you take it every day or every other day, whatever dose works for you. Of course, everyone reacts differently to every drug, so you may have to try one or two different opiates to find the one that works best for you. For example, I can't take oxycodone at all because it caused a really rare reaction called gastroparesis for me, basically my stomach shut completely down and wouldn't push food through. But I can take other opiates without difficulty. Don't write the entire class of drugs off if you can't tolerate one or if the dose is too low the first time. Opiates are designed for pain and they treat pain very successfully, but that doesn't mean you don't need to try a few things or change doses to get things just right for you. Also, keep in mind that opiates come in short-acting form and in a long-acting form. The short-acting forms ALL come with some other drug - like acetaminophin (tylenol) or ibuprofin (advil) in them. Those add-ins are extremely dangerous and even deadly if taken on a daily basis at too high a dosage - and it's VERY easy to reach too high a dose of tylenol in a day! Tylenol will kill your liver, Advil will eat up your stomach and intestines. Therefore, if you're going to be on daily dosing, you need a long-acting form, both to eliminate those dangerous add-ins and to give you more consistent and even pain relief without having to choke down a pill every four hours. Note that any drug with " contin " in the name (oxycontin, MS contin) is a long-acting form of another drug (oxycodone, morphine sulphate) - " contin " stands for " continuous " release. You can use short-acting drugs, like Vicodin/Norco, or Oxycodone, as breakthrough pain meds to supplement a long-acting drug. Hope this information helps. Plain oxycodone, morphine, and methadone are all short acting drugs that usually need to be taken three times daily. They do not have any other medications added to them. Thanks for mentioning Miralax. It is such a simple chemical formula and works so well. All it does is hold water in the bowel and the bowel then acts like it would, if we weren't taking a narcotic. It's quite amazing. Walmart and Sam's Club now have their own brands at a sizable discount. It is exactly the same chemical formula as Miralax, so there is no loss in quality, but a substantial saving of money. Lyndi
Guest guest
Welcome, Larry. In my experience, when doctors tell you to " just live with it " , that really means " I don't know what else to do for you. " It doesn't mean that there isn't anything else to try - that particular doctor is just out of tricks. It never hurts to get a second opinion - and to keep getting opinions. Depending on your condition, there may be another medical professional with some treatment or perspective you haven't heard about yet - a physical therapist, a pain management specialist, a neurologist. Then there are plenty of " alternative " or " complementary " treatments that can provide a lot of help or relief. Massage therapy, chiropractic, yoga, acupuncture, Reiki, Bowenwork, tai chi. Many of these fall into the " might help, can't hurt " category. Don't try more than one or two doctors/treatments at a time, though. I find too many " adjustments " tend to overwhelm the system and negate the benefits of any one treatment. good luck! don't give up! --- Larry wrote: Doctor said in so many words after the MRI that I will have to live with it. Guest guest
Hello Larry and Welcome! You know, do not take the word of that Doctor! Take your MRI CD/pictures and find another Neurosurgeon that will give you another opinion, any Doctor that tells you " you have to live with it " , is full of crap! So do NOT take his word, do yourself a favor and go to someone else until you get the answers that you need. Oxycodone when taken under Doctor supervision and when taken as directed should be fine to take long term. The problem with many opiods is that after taking them for a while your body gets used to them, and then you have to either go up on the dosage or you have to change medications, but for us people in chronic pain, that is what we live with. Another type of Doctor that you might want to get is a pain management Doctor. PM Doctor's take care of people in chronic pain and know how to handle our problems, so see if you can find one in your area. I hope that this helps, take care.
