Guest guest
S, Yes, but don't forget that you wouldn't get an infection if the stupid doctor didn't leave any placenta in us would you? We (or at least I) got infected from the retained placenta in my body being left 3 whole weeks. Poly
Guest guest
Hi Becky, The only information that I got from my RE when I asked about the incidense of AS was that about 10% of women suffer from post partum infection, which is mostly the result of retained placenta. I had 2 D & Cs within a few weeks of delivering and a very bad infection with the second. His opinion is that it was the infection that left me with AS. He did not have any further stats on who ends up with AS, but he did go on to say that when he did his internship in downtown Detroit he saw more of it. Dr. Cohen, an A list, told me that most OB-GYNs might only see 1 or 2 cases in their career if that. I would love to hear if anyone else has more definitive stats. Guest guest
The only stats I have heard about the incidence of AS comes from the two ob's I've talked to it about, so far. One has been practicing 15 years and the other has been practicing 25...they both say they've seen about 3 or 4 cases. These numbers make is sound pretty rare; but, to Poly's point, I think there is a higher incidence than anyone really knows. One ob told me one confirmed diagnosis came from a new patient who was just going through the routine new patient exam. When he read her profile which stated she hadn't had a period in five years he asked her about it. Her answer being she had her last child and stopped having periods and just assumed it was all part of the bodies process!! I was in shock when he told me this. I asked him why someone wouldn't have questioned things sooner. I even wondered if she thought it was pre-menopause or something like that. His answer being that not all woman are as educated as me and don't question so much. Not sure I buy the educated part, but guess I do understand difference in personalities when it comes to questioning situations or just accepting them without further research! I also wonder if some people are just afraid of what they might find out, so they ignore it. Anybody's guess, I guess! S
Guest guest
Poly, Isn't it interesting in post 16829 where Janice states to Becky that her dr. stated that many times a retained placenta is accompanied by an infection. Given that scenario, the doctors pretty much get off the hook. They would blame the AS on the infection, not the technique! What do you think! Just a thought for the woman who are thinking about suing. S
Guest guest
GOOD POINT! Mine was left in four weeks! And, you know, another thing that blows my mind is that when they have any problems with the placenta releasing and have any reason to question if they've gotten the whole thing, they should really send it off to a lab to have it reconstructed and determine if they've gotten it all...shouldn't they? Anyway, in my case who knows what they did with it, because they lost it!!! I think I already told you guys this, but it makes me nuts to know I would have never known that if the pediatrician wasn't so furious (she was walking down the hall to my room ranting and raving about the lost placenta!) that they had to stick my baby many more times, unnecessarily, to get the info they needed for her which they would have normally gotten from the placenta!! Quite an interesting state of affairs, it just seems like this all wouldn't be so hard to argue in a court of law!! S
Guest guest
, I agree. My dh and I have gotten the feeling ever since the 2nd D & C that the Dr's seem a little nervous and are taking extra precautions now to cover their ass. My OB-GYN referred me to the RE. He made sure to call him and review my case history directly before referring me. A very thorough doc or ?? And then when we met with the RE, he emphasizes that it was the infection that left me with AS. It has left us wondering. Guest guest
Just a little CYA is what I would call it! I'm sure once mine knows I've been diagnosed with AS he will do the same so I'm being very careful to have all my ducks in a row before I let him know about it!
