Guest guest
ny -- First of all, I am deeply sorry for the losses you have had in the last year. That is very difficult to deal with. I feel strongly that turning to alcohol is not the best way to deal with your grief but that is another issue that I dont think we should get into in this forum. However, I did want to comment on why not to drink alcohol post RNY. In a person without surgically altered anatomy, alcohol is ingested and it sits in their stomach for a period of time. The alcohol begins to be broken down into the stomach. The stomach acids alter the chemical composition of the alchol so that when it hits your intestines and is absorbed into the body, it is not as strong as it was when you ingested it. In a person with a RNY, the alcohol does not sit in your stomach. Therefore, it is not broken down and hits your intestine at full strength and is absorbed into your blood stream full strength. The result of this is that having one drink post RNY can be like having 2-3 drinks for someone with out RNY. My surgeon has only had one fatality as a result from this surgery and it was from acute alcohol poisioning. Please, just be careful if you are ingesting alchol. If you feel you must have a drink, Please go slow, make them weak and space them very far apart. Just my 2 Cents worth on this topic.. Toni RNY 6/22/98 Down 200 lbs. Guest guest
Penny: When you have an RNY, the lower part of your stomach and the upper part of your intestine, the duodenum get " bypassed. " Somewhere in there, an enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase is produced. Since the booze bypasses that area, it hits your gut about like gasoline. I cut my drinking WAY back after WLS, and then just finally gave it up because relatively small amounts gave me a hangover and I got tired of it. I bet eventually, it would have screwed up my liver. Yes, the buzz on an empty stomach is delightful, but it's awfully rough on your system. I am so sorry for all of the loss you have experienced. There's no easy way through it and no way to change the reality. And for me, there was nothing like booze to ease the pain. But you do get through. ACHOLIC??? > > > HELP ME OUT HERE WHY NOT? Guest guest
Penny, Stuck at 165! What is wrong with that? I have been at 160 since 6 months post op and I will be thrilled to stay here the rest of my life... as for the drinking, I think it is a passing thing. Did you get counseling with your surgery? Maybe now is the time if not... mine said you have to worry about trading one addiction for another, but I would not panic... good luck.. Jan C> 3-11-98 RNY ACHOLIC??? > > >HELP ME OUT HERE WHY NOT?
