We've all been in that same place at one time or another. Don't just " try to relax. " That's not realistic. Instead, do things that will help. I'll list a bunch of options here, and maybe something will click for you. Use ice packs if that works for you, or a heating pad on the sore spots. Fill a sock with rice and heat it in the microwave so you can wrap it around the areas that hurt. (Be careful not to burn yourself!). Try a warm bath or shower if heat helps. If you like to read and can concentrate enough to do so, get out a great book. If not, flip on the TV and find a funny movie. Anything to distract yourself from concentrating on the pain for a while. And if you can laugh, all the better. Do gentle stretches - if the muscles are causing the problem, actually moving and stretching them will help. They can be easy - if your lower back is tight, lie on your back and just bring your knees to your chest and hold them, for example, then leave one foot on the floor and bring just one knee to your chest. They don't have to be rigorous - just warm those tight muscles up! Don't do anything that makes the pain worse. Try meditation. Put on some soothing music, and then get in the most comfortable position possible - sitting or lying down, whatever works for you - and put a soft warm (or cool!) cloth over your eyes. Concentrate on your breathing - in for 10 counts, out for 20. Focus only on breathing as deeply as possible - fill your abdomen with air and feel your stomach going up and down with each breath. Then, starting at your feet, tighten your toes, hold it and then release as you breath out. Feel how much more relaxed your toes feel. Next tighten your feet and release, your ankles and release, your calves - you get the picture. After everything is loosened, then go back to concentrating on your breathing and imagine that with every exhale you are sending some of the pain out of your body. (You may find that you fall asleep before this exercise is over! But even if you don't fall right asleep, you'll find your pain is reduced and your whole body feels stronger.) The old wives tale of warm milk before bed also really does help too. I know it may seem too painful to even try these simple approaches, but if you find the right approach it will be worth the effort because it will help. And you'll feel better just for having taken some control back from the pain. Good luck. I hope you find some relief.
