Guest guest
Oh, I agree that the tendency is not confined to Christianity - it's just the first thing that came to mind when trumpeted about the " blessings of civilization " ... very little of Christian theology is " original " , but many Christians have taken that ball and run with it. Let your women keep silence in the churches; for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home; for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. I Corinthians 14:34-35 Let the woman learn in silence and all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. Guest guest
It does bring out the zealot in me when I see in my everyday life examples of how certain people find poisonous messages in the Bible and use them to justify evil and intolerance. It's not just the " old days " those days when the Church accepted and defended slavery, Church ministers quoted the bible seeking to deny women the right to vote and to plan their families, to deny the roundness of the world, etc. that concern me. It is the fact that this dangerous, stubborn, short-sightedness continues, and it pisses me off. Did anyone hear about the guy who beat his dog to death this week? His defense and the reason he slew the poor creature is that the dog (a male) humped another male dog. I could not make this stuff up. It frightens me that there are so-called Christians who would kill my brother (a homosexual) for merely existing. I mean no disrespect to the messages of peace and love (ie Sermon on the Mount) that characterized the Christianity I thought existed as a child. From where I sit, however, this aspect, rather than being the functional core of the Christian community, is too often IMO a pretty icing on some pretty scary and contradictory messages. I come from a Christian family (ranging from casual to evangelical in observance), went to a Catholic school, most of the people I know are Christian. I am not against Christian people. I am just wary of the zealots - much as I am wary of 12-step zealots. And I resent the apologists from each group that silently assent and allow the zealots their destructive rampages. > >Reply-To: 12-step-freeegroups >To: 12-step-freeegroups >Subject: RE: OT- Just Fun - To Kayleigh, Dina and >Date: Mon, 19 Jun 2000 19:12:49 -0700 > >I agree with you for the most part, , except that I don't think >this tendency is confined to Christianity. > >But if we don't laugh sometimes, we become zealots. >--- >Kayleigh > > Zz > zZ > |\ z _,,,---,,_ > /,`.-'`' _ ;-;;,_ > |,4- ) )-,_..;\ ( `'-' > '---''(_/--' `-'\_) > > > > > > > > > > > >> > >>Reply-To: 12-step-freeegroups > >>To: " 12-Step-Free (E-mail) " <12-step-freeegroups> > >>Subject: RE: OT- Just Fun - To Kayleigh, Dina and > >>Date: Tue, 20 Jun 2000 08:45:50 -0500 > >> > >>Kayleigh: In regards the question you posted earlier about not > >>knowing what I was referring to. Guest guest
Hey, I'm not offended, can't obviously speak for others. I guess noone really understood what I meant by the " ladylike " comment I made, so I'll elaborate a little more. I had a job once in which I was a little more aggressive than some of my colleagues liked. I should add that I was hired by a state agency because the head of that agency did not trust the advice he was getting from the assistant attorneys general, and he was right. However, the AG's complained, and I was told to be ladylike. Subsequently my boss was replaced by someone who knew less about the field than the guy who hired me, and though he didn't trust me at first, he turned around after making about three major blunders based on advice given him by the AG's. (This took about three years and some major federal fines.) Anyway, it became a running gag on the management team (except the boss, in both cases), and it was a great copout, e.g. " I'd get myself some coffee, Tim, but it wouldn't be ladylike, can you help out? " " Bob, I can't move those cartons without becoming unladylike, what if you bring them in here? " There was also stuff along the lines of " Uh-oh, she's about to be unladylike, " or (from me) " If anyone objects to my being unladylike, they'd better leave the room before I make my next observation. " In fact, if this isn't clear by now, the initial objection from the AG's (that I wasn't ladylike) was intended to gag me and limit my effectiveness. --- Kayleigh Zz zZ |\ z _,,,---,,_ /,`.-'`' _ ;-;;,_ |,4- ) )-,_..;\ ( `'-' '---''(_/--' `-'\_) >Kayleigh: In regards the question you posted earlier about not >knowing what I was referring to.
