Guest guest
Moderator Note: Chances are very high that the email address you are being sent is coming from the infected computer - not from the person who owns the email address. The virus programs hijack the address book and send email to every name that is in it. Lyndi. ----------- Crap!! I wish I would have remembered the name of who it was but, I got 4 e-mails, sent within minutes of each other that said in the subject line " I sent you a gift " . It was not sent through the CP group and I had no idea who this person was so I immediately deleted them without another thought. This person is a member but I had never responded to any of her e-mails so I thought it quiet strange that I would have gotten a " personal " e-mail from her so. I will try to remember and let you know. I will say though that over the course of the last few weeks, I have been alerted by my firewall that a virus has been detected and was quarantined. Since, I am the only on that uses this computer, I was wondering where in the heck these things were coming from. Now I have a pretty good idea! Damn invaders! As if we don't have enough to worry about on a daily basis huh? Thank you so much for the heads up Lyndi, it makes life a whole lot easier! Also, if anyone is on face book, there is a new virus being spread through messaging and e-mail. It is called " koobface " . It sends you a message stating something like " you look good in this video " just an example, and then it sends you a link and when you click on it an alert pops up telling you you have to update your adobe flash player, example, and when you do, that is it, you are infected. After that, anytime you use your search engine it then sends you to corrupt websites and boom, you computer is trashed! It was on the Early show and I checked it out on Snopes.com - GREAT place to go to see updates on anything and everything going on. Everyone beware, it is getting worse and more sophisticated, they don't seem to need attachments anymore. like before! Always update and run your virus protection on an every other day basis, I DO, and still feel vulnerable. I will attach other virus scan websites that seems to catch ones that others don't. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ http://www.f-secure.com/security_center/ This one does a " health check on your computer to let you know where your vulnerablilities are and helps you correct them. http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/onlineservices/fshc/front.html Good luck to all! Guest guest
Janeene, The catching of a " hit " on your firewall, with quarantine, happens to nearly everyone sometimes. Hackers (jerks that they are) have computers that scan the net, trying each machine they come across until they get through someone's firewall. Getting that info, that it was caught and you're protected from it, proves that you have a good firewall! Though my husband's day job is repairing transmissions, he's a computer geek the rest of the time. He fixes lots of PC's for people (businesses he associates with, family and friends, etc.) and has seen a lot of these viruses lately. In the last three weeks, he's repaired two business' machines and is on his fourth private pc with these problems. All of the private ones and one of the business were related to facebook, myspace or the free download a game sites. Not one of these machines would even boot up when he brought them home, though he always makes them work again. The trashed machines almost never are. The problem is that it takes a lot of time and knowledge to get them going again, and most techs charge $70 an hour or more. Who's got that kind of dough? And most of us groupers have seen how Grouply is being hijacked and used maliciously this way, too. He uses ESET Smart Security with great success. None of our four pc's or two servers ever have problems. There are several good ones you can download on the internet, but be careful! Some of the sites are looking for suckers and download spyware to your machine. Always get a recommendation before you download! It's terrible that these people (and I use the term generously here) have nothing better to do than cause people such problems. Whether in the ether or in the real world, I believe they'll get theirs in the end! in Oregon --- Lyndi wrote: > Moderator Note: Chances are very high that the email address you are being sent is coming from the infected computer - not from the person who owns the email address. Guest guest
AVG and AVAST are two other FREE antivirus programs. I like AVG better since it seems to have a better record of letting me download legit software without problems, but AVAST works well, too. It was installed last time I had an update, so have been using it for quite awhile now.
