There's a prescription topical gel that contains an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflamatory, such as Advil). The brand name is Voltaren, the drug is actually diclofenac sodium. It works on localized pain and inflammation, unlike the lidocaine patch which just numbs the area. The gel is particularly useful for areas of the body where you can't wear a patch, such as hands. I find it very useful for my arthritis and tendonitis in my hands and wrists. There's also a patch with a similar anti-inflammatory medication for localized use for pain and inflammation, called Flexeril. It's good for larger areas like shoulders or knees.
