Guest guest
Cheryl in AZ Awesome post about how to control eating. I think a lot of us try to " self medicate " with food. Anything to feel better!!!! I, for one, am in pain 24/7 with pinched nerve in back due to spinal stenosis, and have been in one kind of pain or another for many, many years. Needles to say, I am about 130 pounds overweight. (none of the pain related to my weight, though, Dr tells me) One other hint to add to Cheryl's post is also kinda funny but it has worked for me, have a water bottle with a squirty top with you all the time, water, Crystal Light, Iced Tea - whatever with no calories, and it is something to have when you need it, (here comes the funny part) I have often thought that when we need a bit of comfort and have that water bottle with the squirty top, we can always reach for it, is it not unlike the comfort in a small, small way of the bottle when we were babies that gave us so much comfort? NO I don't mean we have to suck on that bottle, but the comfort is there, somehow hahaha. Hey anything is a help when we are so desparate. Oreos, I can actually have in the house, cause I am not a chocolate fan, but Doritoes... Can't have them anywhere! Vicki

Guest guest
Hey All, My name is and I'm new to this group. I am all too familiar with self-medicating with food. My first type of chronic pain was the 24/7 headache that began 15 years ago. In the beginning, having had no experience with chronic pain, I was so anxious and held such hope that someone was going to find a cure for it. My anxiety and dwindling hope gave me lots of reasons to soothe myself with the only thing that seemed to give me any comfort at all - food. As the years rolled on, so did the pain. I was finally diagnosed with Fibro/CFS a few years ago and, although I had long given up on finding a cure, I still found food to be a good distractor. Unfortunately, it also became my enemy. I topped out at 230 pounds. Anyhoo, to make a long story just a little bit shorter, Cheryl's suggestions didn't work for me. I simply didn't seem to have any control over my eating and couldn't eat just 2 of anything. And eat slow? Hah! Not on your life. Don't get me wrong. I tried all of it and they are great suggestions. They just didn't work for me. Yet I knew the extra weight was making my Fibro worse. So I did the only thing left I knew to do. I went to an Overeaters Anonymous meeting. I won't get into a big discussion of OA - suffice it to say it saved my life. I now weigh 100 pounds. OA isn't for everybody but if anyone is interested in hearing more about it, they are more than welcome to e-mail me directly. Here's hoping we all find a solution that works for us... peace, lisa

Support is critical for this kind of problem! Thanks for adding this suggestion to the discussion. Cheryl in AZ Moderator
