Guest guest
>>I try to look OK to help my depression. I am old fashioned. I dress old fashioned. My grandmother was my inspiration. She always managed to look her best. She raised her kids and dealt with a lot of pain. -------- This sounds so like me. I am old-fashioned and I dress old fashioned. Period. I am very conservative dressing, but I do love color. I feel that wearing bright and happy colors helps me to stay in a more positive mood and mode. My grandmother and great-grandmother were both heros in my book. Both suffered through many trials in life and health issues, and both were true role models. They always looked after others and didn't dwell on what they didn't have. They always seemed to make do. I hope that I am doing them some justice, and living in their footsteps. I used to be, and still am, so proud of them. If they could be strong, independent, loving women at a time when it was even more of a man's world, I'm sure I can do it now. With all that I go though, I can't afford all the fancy store stuff. So, I have spent some of my not-so-painful days rummaging through thrift stores for things that hit my fancy. I seem to have blessings with me, because I usually end up finding something new, with the tags still on it, and in just my size. Those are thrill days! When I can get an $80 retail blazer for $3.99! Yay, and hip hip horray for me! I look just as good as the rest of them at work. I sit at my desk sometimes with a silly grin, as I tally up the total cost of some of my outfits. Usually about $15 tops, including the shoes! Then I look around me at the other workers and realize that they surely spent $150 just for their shoes. Even though I don't pay much for my clothing, I keep it in good order and mended. I polish my shoes. I iron or steam what I wear. I feel good about how I look when I go to work and I feel even better that it didn't cost me $150! Anyhow, like the old saying goes, " Clothes do not make the man, " or woman in this case. I often get compliments on my outfits, or people ask where I bought things. I just smile and say, " It was a gift! " And, honestly, it was truly a gift. A gift from God, from the Universe, from the person who gave it brand new to the thrift store, in my name, so that it would be there on the very day, I just happened to have energy enough to go shopping! That, is truly a gift. Also, over the past few years, due to pain, medications, and other issues, I have gone up and down in weight, and if it was not for the thrift store keeping me in clothing, I would never have been able to purchase work clothing in all those different sizes. I have friends all over the US and I have been told that not all thrift stores have good things. I can't say for sure. I know I do have to dig and look in unsuspecting corners, and on misplaced racks, but persistence pays off. It also helps that I live very near to the movie studios, and a lot of their clothing used in movies and on tv shows (hardly worn, or brand new), ends up at the thrift stores around here. And God bless whoever the kindred, kind, wonderful soul is, who donates the brand new, unworn women's dress shoes and loafers in just my size! I am grateful! Guest guest
Jade what a beautiful post. You transported me back to those times. Thank you so much for sharing. I got just such a blessing yesterday. Not at a thrift store but at a sale. I wanted something new to wear out tomorrow night for my hubbys birthday. I got a $60.00 on sale for $16.00. I too love bright colors. I don't do too well at thrift stores because of size. One of my dreaded diseases contributes to being obese. I guess most of us bigger ladies get a find so often that we wear them out!! Anyway I really enjoyed your post. Thanks for sharing.
