Pain is and is not all in the head

Hi All,

This is my first post here and I wanted to contribute something helpful.

I have noticed there being a common statement from doctors and friends alike

that one's pain is " all in your head " . This is a common statement made to people

dealing with chronic pain and it is very frustrating.

All perception of pain, pleasure, in fact all sensation is in fact in your head.

Meaning the perception happens in the mind. If I hit my finger with a hammer,

the pain does not occur in the finger. It does so in my mental perception

process. So, technically, pain is all in the head.

BUT this does not mean the pain is not real. It is real (all who deal with

chronic pain know what I am saying here) even though it is being processed in

the mind. I say again, the experience of pain IS real.

So the next time someone tells you the pain is " all in your head " , you can agree

that this is technically true. But it does nothing to alter the fact of your

experience and dismissing your experience does not help work towards improving

your life.
