Guest guest
Georgiana, You asked about bone cysts. I have (had?) a large bone cyst in my acetabulum. Nonetheless, Dr. Mont was able to install a conserve +. He filled the bone cyst with marrow and said the bone possibly could grow back (too early yet to tell). I don't know for sure, but suspect that bone cysts in the top of the femur could be more serious for resurfacing patients. The local doctor who follows me is concerned about the bone cyst but Dr. Mont is not. I shouldn't say he's not concerned. It's more like it's there, nothing can be done about it, so it's fixed as well as possible, my acetabulum and implant are stable and all should last 20 or more years, so no point in worrying about it. I have asked what he would do if my acetabulum gives out (I think that will go before the conserve plus). Dr. Mont said there are lots of things that will be available in 20 some years, if it ever happens, so not to worry about it. I was told my bone cyst was caused by walking " bone on bone " for so long, which pushed the synovial fluid up into the bone causing a cyst. I also have a lot of deformity in my ace- tabulum and a " skimpy " acetabulum. With a THR I would always have been at risk of dislocating as the cup would have had to be installed to far out to the side for me. Dr. Mont was able to customize where to put the conserve + cup and it is in more toward my middle so as to get the most acetabulum coverage. He also straightened my leg, which used to turn in 10-15 degrees. I was in an abduction brace for 8 weeks, which made my muscles weak. This was not due to the bone cyst. He said I was a complicated case & took over 2 hours to do (most he does in less than an hour). I am doing well now. I have had no pain since the surgery. I still use a cane and am going to PT. They do this weird stretching thing with my leg in PT to stretch the soft tissue so as to make it straight. I now have a straight leg for the first time ever. I'm getting stronger every week and will lose the cane eventually. I've been on my feet walking for 10 hours at a time at an amusement park and can keep up with my 8 year old son and am painfree. IMO Dr. Mont is a miracle worker. Also IMO I think at some point, after making the best informed decision you can, that it's necesary to let go and hope it all turns out well. I always think that when I read the stuff about metal ions in the blood. Yes it is serious and a bummer, but we are all going to die anyway so not to worry about metal ions.
